Not bad for a minor league deal. He's got some pop to his bat and some starting expirience at 1B. Never a bad thing to bring someone in to give some bench guys some true competition for a roster spot.

He's also played 3B some too. Only 10 games there the past 2 seasons though but 147 games there in 2006, 135 in 2004 so some insurance at that position as well.

Maybe he is more of a bench player for Aramis. Chad throws right handed didn't notice that the first time i looked at him.

This offseason has been a tremendous flop for the Cubs (I guess getting rid of Bradley was a good thing)

Makes the off season amazing for me.
NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section.

I agree with this. I don't really see how they've improved the team at all other than getting rid of a cancer in the clubhouse. They are going to need several things to go right for them this season to make a run at the playoffs and with the usual suspects that every year have the words "if he can still healthy and play up to the level he is capable of" I just don't have much optimism right now. Cubs have broke heart too many times now that I'm just numb about anything till they can prove something.

Their starting pitching really worries me right now.

I agree with that too. The best pitcher is Lilly and he's coming off surgury. Z is starting to prove he's not a true Ace but more of a very good #2 or #3 guy getting paid like a #1. Hopefully Wells has another solid season, he was the most consistent pitcher after Lilly. Dempster regressed a little last year. After that we've seen flashes of what Marshall, Samardzida, and Gorz can do and we know Silva sucks so have to hope one of them can finally break out and live up to their potential. I think there are some decent arms in the minors but none that are ready to come up soon and be an end of the rotation starter. Cashner has a big upside but he needs to get some more work in the minors first.

Well they do have a new owner...

I think they're just being a little cautious and also know that just two years ago had a heck of a team and most of the backbone of that team is still there....

This year is all about staying healthy and having bounce back years from guys like Soto and Soriano. If the lineup can stay healthy, they will be a contender for at least the wild card.

It sounds like Lou thinks he can easily add 8 or 9 wins if they stay healthy. Also, I think they are banking on much better hitting after signing Jaramillo the new Batting Coach.

If Z reaches his potential, and Lilly gets to 100% we should be OK. I don't trust Samardjia is going to step up.
