Re: Defense in the NBA
The biggest winner last night was Ron Artest's post game speech.

Re: Defense in the NBA
As good as the defense was last night, I still thought both teams were pressing on offense. In earlier games in the series, there was fluid offense with a lot of motion. The Lakers too often last night were content with letting Kobe do something and it wasn't until the 4th quarter that they opened up their spacing.
The Celtics were killing the Lakers with the drive and kick game, and then they completely abandoned it to a post up. IMO, Ray Allen should have touched the ball on every possession in the 4th.
The game was very entertaining, but it was a little sloppy and scrappy (probably because of the D).

Re: Defense in the NBA
NBA Defense >>>>>> College Defense
Not all teams but a majority of them play great defense. Scoring in the NBA isn't as high as it use to be and yet people make ridiculous claims about how they no longer watch the NBA because they don't play defense like they use to! How does that make sense when teams score a lot fewer points?!

Re: Defense in the NBA
Here's the thing about the NBA. People always complain about the lack of defense, but when a team like Detroit in '04 or any of the Spurs teams win titles, nobody watches and they say they can't stand the boring, slow-down style of play.
I quit listening to NBA haters a long time ago because they don't even watch the games, so there's no reason to waste words with them. It's a great sport with great players that has gotten away from the thugery (Heat/Knicks) and too young "stars" of the 90s. The last 3-5 years has really been a resurgence and renaissance of what the NBA should be, and with guys like D-Wade, Lebron, Dwight Howard and CP3 taking the reigns, I think a lot of fans that left the game will slowly return to it over the next five years.

there was a documentary a few years back essentially bashing NBA, other then your superstars (kobe, lebron, etc) they calculated all fg % of open shots/free throws/etc etc, and they noticed there was a lot more misses nowadays than before
maybe the skillset for defense is the same? you never know

Nolan Ryan still had to work in a gas station his first three off-seasons in pro baseball. Tell me when you see Kobe behind the counter in an ARCO station.

Re: Defense in the NBA
I have watched many NBA games over the years. Star players have always been able to initiate contact and draw fouls to change the flow of the game. "defensive" players need to gain respect from officials before they are not automatically called for a foul when the star makes his "move". Overall I think the NBA is more show than sport, but the players still have amazing skills so the show can be very entertaining at times.

Re: Defense in the NBA
The NBA is a big production, not really a sporting event. When in Phoenix for the bowl game we went to the Suns vs. Celtics game and I can honestly say that I was bored, even at the beginning of the game.
On the defense note, for those of you who back up their defense during the regular season, why do the scores of the games go down so much in the playoffs? Or even better, why do the scores go down as the playoffs go on? Or even better yet, why do the scores of the finals series go down as the 7 games are played out?

Perhaps because people start to get tired.
