Among guys that seem available right now, Brenly looks like the best choice so far.
Sandberg has the sentimental thing, and I'll be excited if we do it. I'm not sure if he's ready or not, but he does seem to have a lot of ability.

Ryno's definitely up for it:
Ryne Sandberg interested in replacing the retiring Lou Piniella | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register
I still don't think he's the right fit. Ryno is going to be a rookie manager trying to win with a veteran team. I'd rather get someone in there that has some experience.
It's sad to see Sweet Lou's career besmirched by the ineptness of the Cubs. Thank you for the World Title in 1990 Lou!
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre not ruling out move to Chicago Cubs - ESPN Los Angeles
I would not hate this. Three great choices in Brenly, Sandberg and Torre.
Best case scenerio...Torre with a 2-3 year contract and Ryno as his bench coach. Ryno signs long term deal after that.
I've heard once last week, before Lou retired, that Girardi might be up for the move. Then again this morning.
I like Lou and all, but the Cubs should've made this move 4 years ago.
My outside perspective of the cubs is that it doesn't really matter who the manager is as long as the gm keeps putting the manager in a difficult position to win with the way they run their organization. I would think they would want to take a look at making changes at the top of the organization as well as long as they're looking at making changes now that lou is leaving.
For example, I know the team I root for would never allow a guy like Marmol to be the closer. Hell, I'm not sure we'd want him on staff. Management stresses fundamental baseball and throwing strikes is pretty fundamental. If you can't throw strikes consistently, you can't be on our staff.
I'm kind of meh of Torre. He would cost a TON of money and I just don't think its worth it to spend a lot on a manager. Thats the one thing I would like about Ryno, he would be cheap. Unless you have an absolute ******* of a manager, they usually don't make a lot of difference in terms of wins and losses. I'd be good with Brenly though.
It does not sound like Sandberg wants anything to do with Bench Coach, he wants to manage. Him under Torre for 3 years would be ideal IMO. Joe Girardi will be a long shot unless the Yankees miss the post season somehow, and the Yanks won't aggressively retain him.
