I agree, this draft pick and the Robert Gallery pick baffled me. As a long time Raider fan, the sooner Al is gone the better. Unfortunately the only conclusion to his reign as the leader of the Greatness That Is The Raiders is his death which is not something that I look forward to.
There could be multiple threads with this title each and every year. No news here.

Yes. This is why I think all professional sports need to adopt a policy that clearly states that all owners of franchises need to be checked for mental health/mental capacity issues once every 5 years. If they find that the owner is bat **** crazy like Al obviously is then they must be removed from actively running the franchise.
To be honest, I think on his deathbed he will admit that he was just f ing w/ us the whole time. Like the worlds longest practical joke.
I'm just glad I'm not one of the Raider fans being ****ed with...

What sucks is...he's sitting in his multi-million dollar house set for life even if he has to repay part of his bonus. Federal drug charges would ruin his day though.

Robert Gallery was the Outland trophy winner. It was by no means a stretch that he would be drafted that high. No one knew he was going to suck.
Both Gallery and Russell were considered the right pick at the time. Gallery was talked up as a franchise left tackle for the next ten years and Russell had maybe the most impressive pro day of a QB ever. Al definitely hasn't helped the Raiders recently but these were both the correct picks at the time of the draft. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Okay, I'll give you Gallery because my doubts could be notched up to Hawkeye hate, but Russell? Did anyone who actually saw him play really think that he had the makings of a franchise QB?? Does pro day (one day) counter a whole season of seeing something different? I'll never be convinced that it was the right decision at the time.

Actually I recall most "experts" having issues w/ Russell. Gallery on the other hand was solid at the time but I still hated it due to him being a Cockeye.
