STORY: Iowa State out-done by Ohio in headscratching loss

Becht says it was preparation. Campbell says the team practiced well. That's as or more concerning than the L. Culture is on the coach, full stop.

    Campbell’s Offense

There are only two things to say about that year: 1) our players took advantage of the circumstances and deserved every win and I'm happy as hell for them and 2) it was not representative of a normal year. We are not a NY bowl team and if 2020 was a normal year we would've had 7-8 wins. A lot...

CFP Championship - Frawgs vs Dawgs

I generally agree with that but there is still a material difference between the 3rd or 4th best SEC team and the 3rd or 4th best Big 12 or Pac 12 team. Namely, the equivalent SEC schools still have the better recruiting classes and are still sending more players to the NFL. I'm looking at the...

CFP Championship - Frawgs vs Dawgs

"Worthy" is an ambiguous term. I think one of the issues in this discussion is that folks have implicit feelings about whether the playoff should be the 4 best teams or the 4 most deserving teams. The committee itself hasn't help by applying unspoken and arbitrary rules. It would be hard to keep...

CFP Championship - Frawgs vs Dawgs

I think one of the issues is that some of these Power 5 conferences really have 1 or 2 elite teams and then a bunch of mediocre to bad teams. Michigan only really has two quality wins this year: penn st and ohio st. Otherwise they just beat up on a bunch of bad to mediocre teams. The problem is...

CFP Championship - Frawgs vs Dawgs

In his first 12 games Duggan threw 3 interceptions. In his final 3 games, he threw 5.

CFP Championship - Frawgs vs Dawgs

Yeah, in the TCU/Michigan game it looked like there were two fairly evenly matched teams where one team made too many mistakes and gave away the game. If they don't make those mistakes they probably win but the teams themselves were close enough to make it a contest. TCU/Georgia looked like FBS...

    LMAO

I'm sure we also had COVID issues but that's not really the point. The point is just that fans probably shouldn't extrapolate any deeper meaning about the state of our program from 2020. Under CMC I think our mean season is 7-8 wins. Sometimes, due to circumstances (COVID, NFL players at key...

    LMAO

See, this is the problem. I'm not saying we didn't deserve those wins or that we weren't a great team that year, I'm suggesting you cannot compare that year to 2019 or 2021 or any other year without mentioning exogenous circumstances. It's not an insult and it's not to denigrate the team's...

    LMAO

2020 was a great season but with a massive asterisk. I'm happy our program and our team got to experience these things but it's not comparable to normal years and IMO shouldn't be used for a bellwether regarding the state of the program.

    Perspective and Reality Check

McCarney. I just looked up the years I was there and I guess we actually, mostly, did ok. All 7 win seasons except for an absolutely brutal 2003 season. Only Big 12 team without a conference win that year... ouch.

    Perspective and Reality Check

Is that you, Scott Frost? In all seriousness, outside of 2020 which probably isn't representative of a normal year, we're a team that averages between .500 and .600 thanks to CMC. That's way better than my days as a student.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Although not as impactful, the red delicious apple can trace its origin to East Peru, Iowa. It was originally called the Hawkeye apple until the rights were purchased by someone out of state who changed the name for marketing reasons. If you go to East Peru, there's a field that has an apple...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Going to type something controversial: In the decade+ I lived in Ames I only ever went to Hickory Park when a guest was in town and wanted to go. It just really wasn't that good IMO. Average.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I'm guessing the thinking goes like this: although they get those ACC games cheap it's also not pulling in the viewership they could be. While it would be more expensive to pay Clemson in the SEC, imagine a regular season Alabama-Clemson game. If I'm a TV executive who doesn't really care about...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

ESPN could run the numbers and determine they'll make more money from a Clemson in the SEC than it would in the ACC. ESPN "runs the show" in both places. The tweet earlier ended with "ESPN is trying to void their TV deal with the ACC." ESPN's best outcome is probably the most valuable schools...

    KXNO Sports Fanatics

I do think the ratio of money to success in the Big 10 is a little underwhelming but the Big 10 does have some blue bloods that have seen success and are quite valuable. Looking at 2022 recruiting rankings they have 3 schools in the top 10...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

In 2022 it's probably more relevant to compare academics and athletics than political events of 161 years ago.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Clemson's 10 win season in 2011 was their first since 1990. They went through a pretty long period of mediocrity there. Dabo turned things around but my suspicion is that their position is more tenuous than most believe. The SEC/Big10 teams are going to have a lot of money to throw at recruits...
