Re: CF: Rep vs Credits - Rep Feedback Needed

I like the rep system as a means to communicate with other members. I both appreciate getting positive feedback, and I like to have a simple way to let others know I like their posts.

However, the rep inflation is getting absurd. And it is causing friction between posters, which is the one thing you definitely want to avoid.

I would recommend keeping it with some modifications to put posters on more even playing ground.

I agree, just lower the amount of rep each person gives by like 10x or 20x or something.

I don't know. I guess when I see people with such larger reps I get "rep envy"

Actually at one time rep level seemed important. You eventually learn that here will always be some people who disagree with your opinions so you just have to take any negative rep in stride and not let it ruin your day. This board was meant to state your opinions and have fun. And I just leave it at that...

Let me get feedback on this then... If we did make it so you got rep at an equal rate instead of based on the givers rep, would we just use that going forward even with the wide disparity in rep levels or would we do some sort of calculation to bring things to a more level ground?

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: CF: Rep vs Credits - Rep Feedback Needed

Another suggestion just occurred to me. I haven’t been posting here very long, but I have noticed a couple of cases where posters were extremely upset because they felt they were singled out because of one post.

I think it would be reasonable to cap the amount of negative rep that could be given to a poster for a single post/thread/day. At some point we all say something we regret, and for some posters that means getting a bunch of negative rep. from multiple users for a single mistake. While some negative rep is probably justified in those cases, it can probably also get too excessive at times, and thus feel like other posters are ganging up on you (even though there is no actual coordination).

Rep points means about as much as fans at Carver Hawkeye Arena....yeah, they're there, but they don't do or mean anything. Just some stat.

You could move them down, but that would be hard. You have to figure that in a few years the group that is here will be 10x what it is now, so us old timers would be few and far between.

I still like the idea of rep by those who have built up some rep level means a little more. But I would just do something to the calculation to lower the growth of it a little.

It wouldn't be a bad idea if it was a calculation of pos vs. neg rep received to determine where people would be at, especially if we were going to go forth with a set amount of rep given or taken away no matter who it came from. Are we trying to avoid the explosion we had earlier this year about rep?

All work and no play makes me a dull boy.

But neg rep has a way of cleaning itself out. When I see a person with huge neg rep, and then makes a good point, I go out of my way to rep them. Usually a few times of that and they are back to positive.

Yes, I agree that it does work itself out over time, and I have done the same thing a few times. This may not be a big issue, but I was just trying to think of a way to reduce the conflict between posters that seems to occur when a poster receives multiple negative reps for a single post.

They could hit you with -1 points, and people are still going to get offended. Anything other than positive will tick some people off.

That's true, but I still believe my proposed change would have some positive effect. I have no idea how much, though.
