Since I started rolling out the credit system, there has been a lot of sporatic comments about what people think of the reputation system. What I want to know is what each of you think are the pros/cons of the rep system and if it still has it's place on CF.
I personally think the rep system still has some value because it's a rating that accumulates based on your peers BUT I also understand the problems of the system.
Please answer these questions and provide comments...
- Should the rep feature stay?
- Should the rep be handed out equally instead of higher ranked rep members having a greater impact on one's rep?
- What changes should be looked into?

I like it, the thing I would change is to slow down the rep given. As more people get more and more rep, it is causing a huge amount of inflation. I am giving out 100k+ rep now. I remember back in the day a pos rep would land you like 80 pts, not over 100k. We had our first 1M rep person a month ago, we will prob have the first 2M rep member next month. You could get to the point in a few months where 1 person will give out 1M rep.

If I could determine what the heck rep was worth I would answer this question.

I don't really understand why getting positive rep from one member should be worth more than another, and I basically ignore what people's rep is, but I do like hearing when someone appreciates one of my posts and I like the opportunity to let someone else know I appreciated their post.

Hey one observation. Can you put commas in rep like you have in credits? Like 1M would be 1,000,000 instead of 100000, easier to read.

I think that rep giving power should be equal for all posters with maybe the exception of moderators and administrators. I really don't put much opinion into rep until someone starts a rumor of some sort, at which point I may take it into account. Like when I was a member of cyclone report, I put more stock into people's opinions that had been members the longest.

I also think every member should have equal weight when giving rep. Maybe give weight by how long someone has been a member, but not by how much rep they have.

At 100k a pop, you should definitely be the most popular person on this site.

Say some stupid stuff to get yourself back to earth and you'll never have the need for commas.

I agree that rep should be pretty equal. I remember back when we first got to 4000 rep and it was a huge deal. Much more even playing ground.

When looking at a person's rep, if it is way below in the negatives, I take his comment/post very lightly. And vice versa, if someone has a bunch of rep he must be credible in the fact that he speaks with reason and not out of his arse. I like the point that a person with more rep can give more rep to a person for a good post but not in the factor of 1000000. instead of 80 give a couple hundred. It people research, speak fairly and cleanly they should have a good rep, but not one that gets put down 20,000 negative just cause he likes NES.

leave it as it is. if someone really has a big problem with rep then they take it too seriously
