all of a sudden think they are entitled to equal OR BETTER coverage Iowa State and Iowa??
Many people called into Cotlar this morning bashing the Register, talk radio, people in general, etc. for not respecting Drake...like Drake deserves all of this media attention.
I understand they are 9-1 but why should they get all of this attention from everyone? They have beaten a bottom of the pack Big 12 team and a bottom of the pack Big 10 team. Their other wins are:
UC San Diego
Cornell College
Wisconsin Milwaukee
UNC Central
Duquesne
Chicago State
Texas Pan-American
Not exactly murderer's row there. I understand they haven't been to the post season in forever but you need to do something other than beating 2 in-state teams who are very down this year.

Because now that Cotlar is the radio voice of the Bulldogs he makes sure to accept every call that has anything to do with Drake.

What has MBB at ISU or Iowa done to deserve media attention?
Other than coaching replacements, player attrition, and historic loses to Drake?
I don't like it - but I see their point.

They're having a great start and the fans who have done nothing the last 20 years are finally talking. Andy Fales used to talk about how Drake fans sit on their hands at games and need to pinch each others' nipples to wake up lol!
I respect them, but I'll really respect them when they can get through Bradley, Creighton, Wichita State ect.

Considering it's the Des Moines Register and Drake is in Des Moines, there is a legitimate argument there. That being said, Iowa State is closer to Des Moines than Iowa and yet they still show Iowa preferential treatment over Iowa State. So, until the Rag splits the Kool-Aid evenly between Iowa and ISU, Drake can sit and spin for all I care.

Tell them to enjoy it while it lasts, ISU will be back very soon. Give them credit they are a nice team and could contend for the MVC title, but the truth is not many people care about Drake. It is a nice story though.

But seriously, both schools have a combined enrollment of over 50,000 students. They naturally get a lot of the focus.
Unless Drake actually gets to the NCAA tournament (like UNI did repeatedly), people will take notice. My point is that someone like Drake (a mid-major school) needs to earn respect.

Can you really make the case they don't deserve some media coverage?

I get very sick of hearing fans complain that they don't get the attention that they deserve. They media has a product to sell. If more Drake fans were buying, they Drake would get more attention. It's just supply and demand. And there is no demand.

Drake gets plenty of media coverage from Coltar anyway. That is one of many reasons I rarely listen to his show anymore. Even when he has people on from ISU and EIU he is always bringing up Drake, or asking questions about Drake. He obviously doesn't realize that the core demographic for his show doesn't give a rip about the Bulldogs.

I will agree with this. Media attention should go to whoever deserves it. Honestly I dont want the attention on ISU yet.

It's all about audience. Iowa and Iowa State draw a much bigger audience even when they suck than Drake would if they were 20-0. Almost all Drake fans, other than bandwagon ones, are alumni because it's a small school in a big city. I don't hate Drake like I do Iowa and would watch them in the Big Dance but they don't deserve the equal coverage because they don't have an equal fanbase that pays advertisers, etc. Do you think a BulldogFanatic.com website would have much success? Didn't think so.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Drake at 9-1 is a story! Stories are what get media attention. There are only so many "Iowa loses to Lu-easy-anna-Monroe" or "Iowa State drops game to Northern Iowa" headlines to go around. ISU and Iowa need to EARN respect - their programs are off to a rough start

They don't come close to selling out their tiny arena. That right there show there's little to no demand for coverage of them.
Drake basketball=UNI football
When they do good, people notice and like to see them do well. When they suck, no one cares.
