Rumor so far: Ferentz will "welcome back" Anthony Bowman

After being found guilty of credit card fraud, Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said he would welcome back Anthony Bowman to the team in 2008. I'm sure he has paid his credit card bill to society.

what a joke. Won't he also get it removed from his record if he stays clean for a yr or something? If you do something like this, getting back on the team (while not great) is something I can understand....but getting a clean record too? What a JOKE!

That maybe a bad move. Havent they learned anything from Pierce and Berryman? Chizik has kicked players off his team for a lot less.

So a link or is this just rumor?

He paid his dues, gotta give him another shot. If he plays great and stays out of trouble you are his hero for the second chance, if he gets in trouble again you are everyones fool, tough spot.

Rumor so far...all over the Hawk blogs quoting Ferentz at a news conference. But I can't confirm it. Maybe we should take bets on this one. I'd bet he will be back.

It's not easy keeping them all straight...I'm confused on who did what.

I hope they let him back on and he screws up again right before the season starts so he and Ferentz's stupid decision comes back to haunt them as yet another BCS championship season spirals down the crapper.

Ferentz is really becoming a loser fast if this has any shred of truth to it.

I sure wouldn't want to be in his shoes. I don't know what Bowmans past all involves but I guess I can understand Ferentz giving him a chance if this is something that he can "do his time" and move on. But Ferentz will also have to remember that if hie messes up again he is gonna get a lot of critism for letting him back on the team.

Criticism might be the least of his worries. I would venture to bet that if he does let him back and he messes up again, that might make him a slightly more desperate candidate for a Jr College assistant coach at best. He's already in hot water about his mediocre seasons at a top 3 coaching salary and this could very well be the straw that would break the camels back.

Not that it would be a bad thing......

No, i think Iowa would keep him around if he messes up again. If they have another mediocre year I'm sure Kirk will fire all of his coaches and get a new staff and see where that takes him.

This isn't special treatment for an athlete. It's called a deferred judgment, and it's a common part of a plea agreement used by prosecutors all across the country. Basically, if you have a clean record and the prosecutor feels you're a low risk to be a repeat offender, they'll offer a deferred judgment -- and, consequently, a clean record following completion of probation -- as an incentive for the defendant to enter a guilty plea. Trust me, the prosecutors were not cutting Bowman any special favors with this deal.

BvK, you've got to quit making so much sense because I "must spread some rep around" before giving more to you.

Re: Rumor so far: Ferentz will "welcome back" Anthony Bowman

I don't see what the big deal is with him coming back. He didn't play much two years ago did he? I just don't see him playing much this coming year with all the WRs coming back for them. Sure Ferentz will look really stupid if this kid gets into more trouble, but I don't think he is coming back because he will make that much of a difference. Maybe he is better than I remember, I don't know a whole lot about him.

I can't keep up anymore with all the arrest they are having, but has he been in trouble before? If so then maybe it isn't right for him to be back.
