Local Hawk News Coverage

I got a chuckle out of watching the Channel 7 news in Waterloo tonight. They were trying to talk up the over achieving Iowa mens basketball program and mentioned how Iowa had a "lock" on 6th place in the Big 10 right now and that Iowa is on a run going 2-0 against the teams in the bottom half of the conference. Talk about being satisfied with being mediocore.

Who's satisfied? The TV station or did they actually quote Hawk fans?

The Big 10 is just terrible. Northwestern, Penn State and Michigan just plain suck. The Mo. Valley is down this year, but it might be deeper than the Big 10 this year.

Sixth place would be wonderful this year, given the players on the roster and a new coach. No one's satisfied with mediocrity every year, but after everyone predicted Iowa to finish 10th or 11th, 6th this year doesn't sound too bad.

Well it isn't over as they say until the fat lady sings.

Hey I'm really not trying to kick a program while it's down. I just found the way they said it amusing. Major spin going on and left you thinking Iowa's going to run the table and win the Big 10.

ISU certainly doesn't have anything to brag about yet, but funny you never hear much about them up here anyway.

The Big Ten has a winning record vs the Big 12 this season, and the bottom of the Big 12 ain't much better.

yeah, pretty much 75% of the local sports news on the hawks here in the cedar valley is pathetic, i basically stopped watching. I don't really need unrespectable local sports news in my life. I don't think "sounding" good this year will be good for iowa in the future. Trying to rationalize tiny success can be hurtful to a program. You gotta expect the best out of your team, that doesn't mean iowa should think they are #1 in the big 10 every year (like they somehow do in football.) But basically, they are a bad team in a bad conference. End of story. Saying HEY we are better than Northwestern, Penn St, Michigan, etc. is not only "not saying much", it's saying nothing.

So, Iowa fans shouldn't have high expectations, or low expectations. High expectations = pathetic fan base, low expectations = failing program.

Perhaps Iowa fans should stop expecting?

I think they did exactly that a couple years ago(at least with basketball.)

Touche`

Actually though, I don't think fans are happy with being a bad team this year, but it's hard to expect much more than that. I'd say the fact that the attendance in CHA steadily rising is a sign that fans have reasonable expectations (14,500 for the PSU game).

Yeah that's a good sign. On a postive note, Coach Lichlighter is a big upgrade. I think he's the Ying for Coach Alfords Yang. Tells it like it is and seems humble. The jury is out if he can really recruit and win, but at least he doesn't p?#s you off just listening to him talk like the old coach does.

Iowa doesnt' deserve that nice a guy. He just doesn't match the fan base.

Iowa is bad this year, but considering what they have and a new coach, they have a nice win or two under their belt and have something to build on.

That said, the Big 10 looks really bad this year in general.

Other than the last line, I agree

I really love Lick's sense of humor. He says it like it is, preaches team, and demands respect, and expects nothing less than perfection.

I was reading how he made his team late back to Iowa City from Ann Arbor because they left the locker room a mess. They had to go in and clean it up.

Tom Davis, George Raveling, & Lute Olson were nice guys and great coaches. Iowa fans harrassed those guys endlessly and forced them out; they'll do the same to Lickliter. They are actually 4-for-4 since they did the same thing to Alford -- it just doesn't look as bad with him since he is not a nice guy or a good coach -- but they did deserve him. He matched the fan base.

Right, you obviously pay so much attentioin to Iowa sports.

When Lute left, everybody was upset. He left for greener pastures in Arizona (I guess browner sand, but whatever). Iowa even built Carver to try to keep him.

Raveling was pressured out because he didn't have much success after a few years - but it was hard for him to follow Lute.

Dr. Tom leaving was all Bowlsby's doing. Iowa fans were excited (ugh) about Alford, but there were a very large number who were upset with the way the Davis thing was handled.

Nice try though.
