Regents ask for change with U of I football

I have been told today that the State of Iowa Regents are demanding changes in the University of Iowa football program. Those include changes in the Iowa coaching staff, code of conduct, how assaults are handled among others, and will be announced soon. As I've been saying, this is a very serious situation for the University of Iowa. Some high administrative officials for the state of Iowa feel the University has been less than forthcoming on it's reporting of potential crimes that have taken place. The moves are buying time for Kirk Ferentz in my opinion, but he is on the edge of losing his job if any more infractions involving players on the Iowa football team occur. This is no longer something that will be swept under the carpet. I have been told a new coach will be added to address player conduct, we should hear soon.

About time someone did something. What the U of Iowa is doing just isnt working.

I'm not an expert on sports, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night

Oh its working just fine for me

I'm surprised that the state congress hasn't come out in favor of KF and his player discipline practices. What iowa players have been doing is creating work for police officers thereby creating jobs and boosting the economy. Who says they don't do anything good over there?

TRUE & VALIANT

Sorry, the Regents don't get to decide who's on the Iowa coaching staff. They can demand all they want, and it will still be ridiculous. The issues are bad, but targeting the football team would be a serious mistake. The football team gets a lot of publicity for their actions, but make no mistake about it, there are far greater issues at all the state schools regarding arrests than just on the Iowa football team.

If they want to do something useful with themselves, they need to look at how discipline is being handed down to all students with similar offenses. On account of the majority of Iowa's arrests being drinking related, it's no different than all the other drinking charges around the state.

Hey, 18-20 messups for the team in one year? Boyz will be Boyz.

Contrary to the opinion of the U of I Faculty Senate and Hawkeye fans, the Regents call the shots at all of the public universities in the State of Iowa.

While they may get to call the shots, they don't get to fire employees without reason, and I can guarantee that the U of I would put up a HUGE fight to save any one of their faculty members.

They can call for staff changes all they want, but it will fall on deaf ears. The fact of the matter is, you can search through campus police blotters, and you'll find plenty of college students getting into the same amount of trouble as these football players did. The problem is, these football players are in the eyes of the public, and draw more attention to the problem.

I mean, I agree that there are things that need to be done. I don't like hearing how an Iowa player gets pulled over for DUI, or gets a PAULA, but it's just a drop in the bucket.

No doubt the IC police are now on high alert for football players. They are bringing dishonor to the university when they are flashing the money on their websites. This is not Jersey or Detroit.

Oh that's crap SH. Don't minimize the situation by giving the "other students are violating these laws too" line. The Iowa FB program off-field issue is a complete debacle and will (deservedly so) be under a microscope for a while. Why? Because they put themselves in that position. These ongoing issues, while some of them minor, are certainly not a drop in the bucket. The more that pile up (and there is a huge pile) - the worse it gets.

The fact that almost nothing has been done to reactively (silly a proactive approach would be used) handle this should alarm you even more. The Regents have a right to get involved and IMO, could have easily been involved months ago.

If any Iowa fan is not very worried about the state of the Iowa FB program/coach (ie - not giving the company line of "everyone else is doing it") - they're completely crazy and aught to be committed.

Fact is, there will be a change of staff announced shortly, and it came about because of the Regents pressure on the University of Iowa. And, the Regents did hire two special investigators, and more than one feel the University of Iowa may have committed obstruction of justice violations. I'm only relaying what is happening. As for who has jurisdiction, the facts will speak for themselves. If nothing happens, then I don't know what I'm talking about.

A drop in the bucket.....if that high of a percentage of any organization associated with one of the public universities has arrests in a year it will put up red flags and be investigated as well it should, no matter if it is a high profile team, a non-revenue team, a fraternity, the unicycle club, or anyone else. If anything if it was something like a frat it would have had major consequences before now.

When all is said and done, more is said than done

Iowa is like some other schools where it becomes too convenint to sweep a series of event s under the rug. The sad thng is these events happened weekend after weekend. This shows poor team management by KF crew no matter what anybody says. If the public finds out am assistant coach helped to cover up for more tragedy, the coach will be in deep kimshu. The school is about education including ethics and is not just about sports. The Big Ten Network could run a speciall on the troubles of Iowa.

Re: Regents ask for change with U of I football

There's more to come on the sexual assault investigation that made the papers and was then conveniently swept under the rug.

When it hit the papers at the end of the season, Kirk Ferentz said that he did not know anything about it until that point and that if he had known anything, he would have contacted the proper authorities. But he suspended the players in question for "undisclosed reasons" four or five weeks before the story hit the papers. The Iowa AD isn't about to conduct an impartial investigation, but Ferentz could be in serious trouble if an independent investigator starts snooping around. He will probably have to come up with a scapegoat and fire an assistant. Hopefully nothing will happen to Kirk...if it did, Iowa might replace him with a coach who could beat us.
