Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

Iowa has 7 recruits coming next year. They must really be desperate, but 7 recruits in one year isn't the smartest thing, IMO. it isn't exactly stacked.
Here's the recruits, and the order I think they'll pan out.
1. Aaron Fuller-underrated, potentially a very good d1 player.
2. Gatens-IMO, vastly overrated, plays like a pf, but is only 6'4".
3. Anthony Tucker-average, nothing special
4. Bawinkel- Another average swingman
5. Jermain Davis- ^^^^^^^^^^
6. Andrew Brommer- IMO, thoroughly unimpressive. Won't turn out to be much of a player.
Really, Iowa is bringing in a lot of players, but not much talent. I don't see them being very good unless Lick really steps up his recruiting. I think Iowa State's class is better than theirs, because it has Buckley, Eikmeier, and Hamilton. Buckley and Eickmeier have the potential to be way above average.

I like the fuller kid though. Also it does not take a bunch of all americans. Just a few with some good support. Hopefully we can add a good one also.

Gaten's is going to be a great player in a couple years.

I hope you're right about Eikmeier. I know he is a great shooter, but he really needs to be a ball handler for us too. Guys are going to come out and guard him, he needs to be able to drive to the lane which means putting on 20-25 pounds of muscle.

After watching him play in the state tourney, I don't think so. He played like a power forward, and isn't much of a ballhandler. IMO he is vastly overrated.

I think Gatens is going to be a good one at Iowa. I've seen him play many times and have been impressed each time.

Fuller and Tucker should be good as well. Tucker was just named the Twin Cities' Metro Player of the Year in Minnesota. He's obviously doing something right.

Not sure about the rest.

Re: Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

I'm not all that sold on Gatens. The kid is built, I'll give him that, but how much bigger can he get? At some point, it isn't going to help him. He can shoot OK, but his handle is questionable. And at SF, he is going to be shorter than most of his opponents.

The kid should be a good role player, but IMO he's no Haluska or Horner. I would be shocked if he's ever all-conference.

So I take it you've seen all of these guys play on multiple occasions so you can back up these claims?

We brought in 6 last year as well, was that a bad idea too? The classes were very similiar as well, with the exception of Brackins. We have a bunch of 2/3 star kids in this class. They have a bunch of 2/3 star kids in their class as well with Gatens who is a top 100 kid. Honestly, to me, the classes look very similar on paper even though I don't think they have a true point guard which is something they should be looking at as opposed to 18 swingmen.

I have seen Tucker, Gatens, Bommer, and Davis play. None of them impressed me.

I agree. But just to add to your post:

Gatens was Mr. Basketball in Iowa
Tucker was Twin Cities Metro Player of the Year
Fuller was Mr. Basketball in Arizona

I also don't know much about the rest but this is a nice start with these three.

Re: Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

I'm happy with the guys coming in. However, I know this has been mentioned, but it would be nice to see a few bigger inside guys. Cole and Tate will be good, and Brommer could be a decent player in a few years, but there is absolutely no inside depth. Obviously Iowa will be a 3 point shooting team, and it will be hard to shut down all of them on the same night, but it's still nice to have a go-to guy inside.

But, I'm sure Lick knows what he's doing, and he's pulling in some good recruits. The thing that excites me, however, is they all seem to have good grades and are "in love" with the U of I. There's a big difference in what Lick is recruiting and what Alford recruited.

Re: Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

I like Iowa's class. I think it is solid (nothing super duper awesome). I am impressed with the guys they are recruiting more than I was with Alford.

I don't see why people are dogging Iowa's class. Yes, they lack a definate big but they are getting some good players. I think their recruiting class is very similar to ISU's in that there are a few good plays and a few "projects". All in all, both classes are filled with players to fit their respective coache's "system" and I think they will both end up being good for their respective schools.

Re: Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

One thing southernhawk, and we mentioned the same thing when ISU got Mac.....is it that he's pulling in great players or is it that his recruiting is a lil different then it was at Butler......Meaning the constraints he has for various reasons at EIU will be much tougher then at Butler, so he was able to recruit great athletes that were not able to make it into other schools. Is he recruiting big ten players????

As far as evaluating them - I think both Fuller and Gatens will be solid players. But, for Indyclone to point out that Gatens was Mr Basketball in Iowa - who cares....we've had some great Mr. Iowa basketball players, but, the past couple have been weak and ISU can speak from recent experience, just because you have Mr. Basketball in Iowa as a title means little when it comes to playing ball with the big boys (Vette-enjoy playing at Wartburg)....

Being named to Metro all star team big deal......if he's that good he should be under consideration for player of the year for his respective state and different states have different levels of competition.....

Out of EIU's class, i really like Fullers game and think he will blossum at iowa. That said, before they recruited Fuller, they were really recruiting Mann and he chose ISU over Iowa. For me, to see who EIU is recruiting against with these guys tells me a lot about them. Bawinkel, Davis, Brommer all were mid major prospects with a few majors involved. Of course they love EIU, compared to Eastern Michigan, Utah State or SMU where would you want to go to play ball......One comment about Fuller - i had read on a message board indicated that he was an academic risk and that may explain why he hasnt signed a letter of intent yet, he hasnt qualified.....

I think Lickliter is a very good to great coach. It will take him a little time, but he will turn Iowa around. This first recruiting class will not be a measuring stick for future recruit classes imo, he is known to be a very good recruiter. Both schools are going through major transition, the one thing thats worries me is about the styles of each coach. For me, the system installed at Butler was an exciting, fun to watch, fast tempo game that stud recruits will want to play in - if executed well. Currently he hasn't the talent level to run it, but that will come. At ISU i'm not sure what our offensive philosophy is, but, i hope that as our talent level increases so does the level of play. Thats what i was most disappointed with, was how the team operated in the half court and the lack of up tempo - I pray that it was based on the lack of quality guard play and that next years incoming class can improve on that......PLEASE - all i want for x-mas is 3 fast break opportunities a game....thats not asking too much is it???

K

Re: Iowa has 6 incoming recruits

Everyone was probably unimpressed with Drakes recruiting classes the last few years as well. It is impossible to tell how players will work and how teams will gel. Sometimes, thing just line up perfectly despite a shortage in stars by names. I don't see how Iowa's class is any more or less impressive than ISU's class.
