Marty and Miller talked about this on their show yesterday. Miller actually accused then police chief Pat McCarney of covering it up

However, as was stated, how come none of this was in the media? I think you will admit that 'ole Hayden probably had a lot of power with those fellas back then.

Sounds like the regime, apparently started under the classless "Fry" has just been doing "business as usual" up to the current day.... Thank goodness there is a "player development professional" who is now coming to Iowa City to "fix" the problem of football players getting "caught".
New solution: Don't get caught, and if you get caught, sweep it under the rug... |

The days of cover-ups are over. It's a feather in a reporter's cap if he can find anything negative these days. Do you honestly believe that the media is still covering things up in Iowa City? They ran stories on players getting tickets for alcohol possesion. This is a "crime" that 99.9% of college students could be charged with and is less serious than speeding, in my opinion.
With the internet, it's impossible to cover-up anything.
Anything that football or basketball players do is going to be reported in Ames or Iowa City.

In that 1981-1993 era, we all know how good one in-state school was and how bad the other was. As a result, you had all of the media fawning over Hayden's program, jumping on the front-runner bandwagon.
There was so much coverage, that if anyone wrote a negative piece about Hayden or the program they would be in danger of being blackballed and not allowed future access. And that didn't bother UI, because for everyone that got ousted there were another dozen typewriter jockeys trying to get into the 'circle of trust.'
So, it resulted in a stable of reporters who walked on eggshells so as not to tick off Hayden, with all these flowery fluff articles/reports. The remnants of that attitude are still evident in guys like John Campbell at KCRG. |
