This makes very little sense. Didn't Pugh sit on the bench behind Young and Sims for two years waiting for his chance to be the starter? And now that his chance is here, he is going to transfer? I wonder if a coach, police captain, or district attorney told him he'd better get out of town.

I agree that there are plenty of problems on all college campuses, the biggest difference was how Iowa handled it problems. By not disciplining it's players, letting them back on the team and trying to cover up problems, the problems spun out of control At least now, it has come to a head and action is being taken by Barta and KF to actually kick players off that deserve it. If they had done this sooner, the list would have been considerably shorter. And, it took external pressure from a number of sources that forced their hands. With Iowa now under the microscope, I believe the number of problems will be much more manageable. KF may be a nice guy, but he lost sight of what being a college coach is all about. Hopefully, he is relearning.

How cool is that. And if anyone STILL thinks there's not a significant difference between ISU and U of I, well you're smoking something....

Look at the evidence: From 2002-2004 Iowa goes 31-7. During these years Ferentz was paid somewhere around the middle of the pack compared to Big Ten coaching salaries.
After the 2004 season he signed a renegotiated contract with automatic raises that guarantees him between $25-30 million dollars through 2012. His record over the next three years fell from 31-7 to 19-18, and that's with easier schedules that included a Div II team (Montana) and no Ohio State and no Michigan for one of those years. For the past three years he's been the Big Ten's highest paid coach and his Big Ten record over that time is 13-19.
Hopefully JP can learn from Iowa's mistake. If Chizik takes us to the upper echelon of the Big 12 I have no problem with locking him up with a long term contract. But we need to make sure his guaranteed salary stays reasonable and that he can get to the top pay level in the conference by hitting incentives. Money aside, we would look like idiots if we paid our coach the highest salary in the conference for a 13-19 record.

I lived in Ames 4 years and worked in Coralville for 4 years. It is different worlds. EIU has a very high % of students from Illinois (Chicago). I think a lot of th big city mentality and culture finds its way to Iowa City. ISU is pretty homogenous with Iowa kids and the out of state students are scattered from around the globe so there is not enough of any one type to affect the culture.
On I side note.......How can Jevon Pugh be at spring practice if he was not enrolled for spring semester?!?!?!? Inquiring minds want to know !!

I don't completely agree. We have not dealt with a pair of sexual assault cases in recent history. And with exception of Berryman and another guy or two - players with off-field transgression have been booted.
ketelmeister is spot-on. Iowa has handled these issues in about the worst possible manner - making this much worse.

I'm sick of hearing about the Hooks and Nash thing as someone who was there they were falsely accussed and cleared. So that should not be a mark against ISU.

My fault, frankly I don't really pay all that much attention to the legal stuff. I definitely apologize to Hooks and Nash then, because that would be a heck of a thing to carry around.
Regardless, none of the Iowa guys have been charged regarding the allegations from this past fall. People are holding that against them. With the exception of Dana Brown (who was a repeat offender and should have been off the team long before his last transgression) I really haven't seen anything that really blows me away other than the recent drug charges. Mostly it's drinking crimes.
I think with the volume of arrests something needs to change. He's trying to address that with their life skills guy. IMO he needs to do some other things. Regardless I don't think anybody should be casting stones because we've had our fair share of trouble and a lot of it has been more than just underage drinking and whatnot.

Kirks speech to new recruits:
"Our justice system sucks. You know, there are over two million Americans behind bars. That's a little larger than the population of Houston. Every year, there are enough children born in prison to fill 250 Little League teams and enough people are raped in prison to fill a stadium more than three times. Can you picture that? Three stadiums full of people raping each other? I know I can".

Guess my info was correct. If I was a skeptic, I'd wonder why he is leaving. But I'm not. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 Hawks lose top running back By the Press-Citizen ADVERTISEMENT University of Iowa Hawkeye running back Jevon Pugh is no longer registered as a student at the University of Iowa, according to the UI registrar's office.
Pugh, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound sophomore from Naples, Fla., was listed atop the spring depth chart at tailback along with junior Nate Guillory. The Hawkeyes were looking to Pugh to fill a void left after the final seasons of Albert Young and Damian Sims.
According to the registrar's office, Pugh was registered as of Monday, but is no longer listed as a student today. | |

Nah, no sour grapes. Iowa picked up 4 running backs in the 2008 class because they were expecting Pugh to not be enrolled anyway. Guillory, Greene, and a new guy name in Paki O'Meara.

It's funny how Dan Mac was the ultimate spin machine and now kirke will have to become one. I dont see how this guy's 3mil paycheck is not on the hot seat.
