Iowa Hawkeyes have won a NC in football (not sure of year)

Check out wikepedia for Iowa Hawkeyes and read the titles they have won. Wrestling, M.Gymnastics, Field Hockey, and Football.

hmmm I dunno . . . But I do know Iowa squared off in some epic battles with the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles from the TV show Coach. I do remember them playing in some sort of a bowl game on the show.

P.S. The Iowa State Marching Band played the theme song for the show Coach.

I think that was in the 1950's. Two of the major rankings had them second and the other one had them as the National Champions.

My point is that they never have won a title period, though a small fraction of their fans live in another reality and probably think that they have. Someone tried sneaking it in to promote misinformation. No AP title and that is the only one that counts.

None of those were AP or BCS, so really, they haven't won a "real" national title in football...

According to that website they have 5 NCs. Don't let those people find out about that. Of course most of those polls/groups nobody has heard of.

Considering there weren't any "real" national titles back then, those polls were only slightly less credible than the AP.

Of course, if you search hard enough, you could probably find about half a dozen teams declared national titles for each year previous to 1960.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

There isn't an NCAA sanctioned national champion in 1-A football now because of the bowl game system

Re: Iowa Hawkeyes have won a NC in football (not sure of year)

There never has been a "real" national championship in D1A football.

That being said, prior to 1936 there were NO polls, so all the "national championships" are awarded by historical research. After 1936 and until 1950 when the UP/UPI/Coach's poll kicked off, the #1 in the AP poll is generally accepted as the "national champion", though they weren't ranked until after the bowls until 1968 in the case of the AP and 1974 for the coach's poll.

Saying Iowa has ever won a national championship in football is inaccurate, and doesn't jive with the wikipedia entry on it either. NCAA Division I-A national football championship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

is there a trophy? If yes, then then have a NC, if no, well, they don't.

1958, they were award the Grantland Rice Trophy or w/e it was called and it was a "mythological" nat'l championship, which was awarded by a group of football writers who felt iowa was the best team in the nation that year, since there was no championship game, despite iowa having both a loss and a tie and LSU was undefeated.

But I guarantee most hawks will try and say that they have a NAT championship in FB. Just like they say they were co-champions of the big 10 years back when they tied with Michigan, DESPITE losing to michigan head-to-head that very year. Maybe I am just stupid and all the hawk fans are right, but apparently to them my (two teams have same record, team who wins head-to-head is the champ) logic is stupid.

IMO, they have no nat'l championship. They DO have a mythological trophy that says football writers REALLY liked them 50 years ago...

Technically they did tie for first in the conference standings and did get a trophy as Big 11 champs. Iowa beat Ohio State that year who beat Michigan so I don't know who's logic is stupid. Agruing with them over this is about as stupid as some of our fans saying we were Big 12 North Co-Champs one year.

As far as the national title, who cares it was over 50 years ago when there were probably only 50 Division I schools to begin with.
