Keno Davis to Providence?

KCCI TV is reporting that Providence is interested in hiring Keno Davis.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

No way. He has a better thing going at Drake right now and if he is really looking to advance his career why leave a program that has a chance to win another conference championship?

Finish what him and his dad started and he will have much better offers later.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

So far George Mason coach Jim Larranaga (a Providence Alum) and University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford have turned down the job.

They are in a worse position right now than we are.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

It seems like he'd at least have to think about considering it's a job in the Big East, even if that conference is a monster right now.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

Man that would be awful. I hope he holds out for a job that he can maybe have a bit more success at. Maybe some of these other schools like Stanford or OSU will miss on a few guys and Keno can get one of those jobs. That would be outstanding for him.

I agree. I don't know why he wouldn't at least seriously consider the job. It's a huge step up from Drake.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

It would be hard to turn down, but it would also be nice for him to show at least some loyalty to a school that handed him a job without any head coaching experience. Maybe he's playing them for more money from Drake? I think Keno's a good coach, but grabbing him after only one big season when he lost in the first road of the tournament is somewhat of a gamble for Providence.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

Apparently he missed out on a trip to the Governor's today with the rest of the team due to a "recruiting trip."

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

This is an excerpt from the Providence Journal:

Friars have their sights on Drake’s Keno Davis

"It appears that PC has now focused its search on Drake’s Keno Davis. It took the Friars several weeks to contact the Associated Press’ National Coach of the Year, but he has emerged as the leading candidate to take the job. Barring a breakdown in negotiations, Davis could be introduced as the next coach at Providence as early as today. In his first year on the job, the 36-year-old Davis led Drake to a 28-5 record this season. The Bulldogs were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Western Kentucky in a wild overtime game. Davis was born and raised in Massachusetts and is the son of Dr. Tom Davis, the former head coach at Boston College. Tom Davis eventually landed at Drake and helped his son take over the position.
After being turned down by Ford last week, PC contacted Davidson’s Bob McKillop but was dismissed. Three other prospects — George Washington’s Karl Hobbs, Iona College’s Kevin Willard and Hofstra’s Tom Pecora — were all not in the mix as of yesterday."

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

Huh, didn't realize that Keno had been raised in the northeast. That might add to his interest in Providence.

Re: Keno Davis to Providence?

If he stays a few more years and wins he will cash in when he moves up. If this year was a one hit wonder then he will be at Drake for a bit and never get the big payday. I guess it will come down to how he feels the team will be in the future. If he stays and if he keeps winning there will be better jobs than a rebuilding job at providence.

Why would he wait a year if he has a chance to go to a conference as highly regarded as the Big East now? He has little to gain and potentially a lot to lose by passing on an opportunity like this.
