Recruiting your own son

It's interesting that Licklider chose to have his son walk-on, but Ferentz chose to give his son a full-ride. Both approaches are perfectly within the rules. I just like Licklider's approach better.

I would tend to agree, especially with the salaries they make, but I also understand wanting to give your son due credit if he actually earned the degree. On the other hand, paying for him to go to school is like getting an extra player without using a scholarship.

Ferentz's son is worthy of a scholly, Lick's isn't.

I think this was already discussed previously (too lazy to find the thread). It comes down to a question of whether Lickliter's son and Ferentz's son were good enough to get a scholarship at a comparable school. If the son is, then they should probably get a scholarship at the father's school. If not, they they should probably have to walk on at the father's school. If the son isn't good enough to get a scholarship at a comparable school, and gets one at the father's school, then the coach is crucified for preferential treatment of his son. If the son is good enough to get a scholarship at a comparable school, but walks on at the father's school, then the coach is crucified for getting a scholarship level athlete without having to use a scholarship because it is his son. Bottom line is that the income of the family shouldn't come into play for the athletic scholarship.

Maybe so, but if you're making $3 million a year aren't you foolish burning one of your 25 scholarships on your own son? You could use that scholarship to bring in a 26th recruit. But I guess if you don't mind allowing your other son to live in taxpayer subsidized housing, then burning a scholarship on your other son won't keep you up at night.

True. Ferentz's son may have deserved the scholly but you would think it would be nice to have any extra one by paying for your son's tuition and having him walkon.

Re: Recruiting your own son

I'm gonna go ahead and try this one more time. First of all, as stated above, Ferentz was worthy of a scholarship, Lickliter is not. Secondly, Ferentz tried to do the walk-on thing with his oldest son, who also definitely was a scholarship athlete. Because of his walk-on status, who couldn't take part in training table among other things. So Kirk gave him the scholarship instead of putting him at a disadvantage.

That is a good explanation. The other point that was raised about one deserving the scholarship and another was also the key point here.

Not being on scholarship creates problems as well, like them not being able to use a lot of the academic stuff for athletes and not being able to eat at the training table, etc. There was a good reason that Ferentz Jr. got a scholarship.

Re: Recruiting your own son

So, everyone mentions "the training table" as well as some other unspecified benefits. As we all know $3 mil a year is not enough to buy food for your kid as well as welfare housing, what are these "unspecified" benefits everyone refers to, but doesn't specify???

No. Only private schools do that (and I'm not sure all of them do it).
