Walk On

Re: Red Flag

Didn't they go 10-2 or something like that with a 6th string walkon running back and a first year starting QB in Drew Tate. I remember them going 11-2 in 2002 with a bunch of walkons (Dallas Clark and Robert Gallery for sure) and all those two did was get drafted in the first round. I would take 14 walkons for us if it meant a BCS bowl and double digit wins.

This just proves the two deeps don't really mean a whole lot, especially this time of year.

They're not talking about one player. They're talking about 8 out of 22 starters. And from an 85 player roster, they don't even have scholarship backups and have to resort to walkons? I guess all the 2nd string scholarship players are in jail.

Moeaki has been injured once, as far as I recall, but it was last September. If he can't even practice seven months later, why would you count on him? What kind of football shape will he be in if and when he is able to practice?

You don't see ISU betting the season's fortunes on Jason Scales -- who by the way, would be Iowa's #1 running back if he were on their team.

As Lee Corso would say....

Not so fast my friend!

The Hawk fans would tear this comment apart.

Re: Red Flag

I think it is dangerous to read too much in to a spring depth chart. Certainly much more fluid than any other time of year, especially with guys sitting out due to injury.

Plus, ISU has had its share of walkon STARTERS in the past, in guys like Lane Danielson, Jack Whitver, Jordan Carstens, etc.

Laugh it up all you want, every one of the guys I listed will be starting come fall. I'd rather these guys sit out the entire spring if that's what it takes to be 100% when it matters.

BTW, Bulaga and Bernstine aren't injured, they both had surgery a couple months ago and the staff is just playing it safe.

I don't know how much you guys know about Amari Spievey...let's just say I'm not worried about the CB position at all this season.

Re: Red Flag

I admit to knowing little or nothing about Mr. Spievey but I do know that it takes a special player to make an immediate impact at corner.

LaMarcus Hicks was an All Big 12 player as a senior but struggled to see the field the first half of his junior (transfer) year, used mostly in nickel situations.

I'm sure your Mr. Spievey won't have those problems. After all he is going to Iowa and not a lesser school like USC or Ohio State.

Are you saying that Scales isn't better then Paki O'Meara? In the long run one of Iowa's RB's they have in the fall may be better, but not right now.

I'm saying Shonn Greene is better. I'm saying Nate Guillory is 90% likely to be better (has more playing time experience).

I'm not saying that Scales is a bad back. But I think people are trying to make a bigger deal of Iowa's RB situation than is needed. While it may not be the best situation in the world, but it'll be fine.

According to Kirk's PC yesterday...Shonn's grades are not going to be an issue. He will be back.

Guy who just started working in my office graduated from EIU back in December and knows quite a bit about Greene. He says if he makes grades that he is going to be the next LT. I say just like Drew Twit was supposed to win the Heisman?????

Did I miss something? Am I supposed to care or even know anything about a SUI (those were their letters when I was growing up -- ours were ISC) team?

We are totally wasting electrons and neurons on this discussion.
