Maybe you should give Kirk Ferentz a call. In his most recent press conference he didn't seem too impressed with Guillory:

Some Hawkeyes fans might have held out hope that Guillory could fill that role, but it turns out blocking wasn’t part of the curriculum at Coffeyville Community College. Ferentz said he has yet to sort out who to block and how to block them.

“The first three practices he had no idea what he was doing,’’ Ferentz said.

Or Greene, for that matter:

But even if Greene does make it, he hasn’t toted a football in a year-and-a-half, and Ferentz said he’s not likely to hit the ground rumbling.

“We’re not looking for him to be the savior,’’ he said.

But at least he gave a big vote of confidence to his starter:

The sophomore walk-on from Cedar Rapids Washington, who never has carried the ball in a college game, received this ringing endorsement from Ferentz: “If we have to go with him in the fall, we will.’’

A few seconds later he piled on even more praise: “Obviously, we’re hoping we’ll be able to supplement him with other players in the fall.’’

I'm glad he's back to being negative. Gets me more confident than when he was positive about the up coming seasons.

Re: Red Flag

SouthernHawk. Are you concerned about your OL this year? Last year they were mostly (75%) RS sophomores and RS juniors. So most of them had been in program 3-4 years already. I find it hard to believe that even with a good O-line coach that they will make significant progress this late in their careers. Couple that with the fact that you have a mediocre QB, no proven RB and are thin at WR. Even with Brodell, DJK, and Meokei (sp?) who are all good players I would be VERY concerned about my offense if I were a Hawk fan. Your defense should be above average and with a soft schedule I don't see much more than 6-7 wins. Thoughts ??

Not to be an a-hole, because this is a very respectful post, but I wasn't aware that 3-4 years of experience (on O-Line), a year under a QB's belt, 4-5 decent to good WRs, and 5 guys contending for a RB spot was a negative thing.

In all honesty, last year's offense was bad. But it can only get better. The past doesn't always foretell the future. With the returning experience, no improvement would say a lot about the coaching and players.

Without over-analyzing it too much, (because I haven't) I gotta think the UI recent FB legal woes will take its toll on the W-L column this fall. I base this purely on assuming the suspensions, dismissals, etc.

They will have a depleted roster, and this depth chart probably reflects that.

The majority of the losses were previous to last season. The others that are no longer with the team after the season ended were, for the most part, not contributors.

Other than Cleveland.

BTW, Bulaga and Bernstine aren't injured, they both had surgery a couple months ago and the staff is just playing it safe.

I don't know how much you guys know about Amari Spievey...let's just say I'm not worried about the CB position at all this season.
Wouldn't they have had surgery for some sort of injury? Or do they just find it fun?

I'm not sure what the surgery was for, they might have just been cleaning something up or taking preventative measures. Look at Tiger Woods, he had surgery a couple days after finishing second at the Masters and he sure as hell didn't look injured.

Re: Red Flag

Well, if your starting linemen and DB's are planning to stand there swinging their arms while their feet are planted to the ground, you should be all set.

I was right. According to Dolph today Bernstine and Bulaga both had "shoulder clean-up" from high school injuries.

It's certainly an OK sign, but I remember back in 2005 following the miracle win in the Capital One Bowl, Captain Kirk was less than enthused about the team's spring practices. This was when a lot of people were calling for Iowa to be the 2005-06 sleeper to play for the national title and for Drew Tate to win the Heisman... and was also back when I was still half-Hawk, half-Cyclone (having gone to Middle and High School in IC), and still following both teams.

Not to say it's a bad sign that Kirk showing some negativity in order to motivate his guys, but it's not a predictor to how he will coach or how the team will perform that year.

Deep within the heart of Iowa, a storm is brewing...
... the winds of change ripple throughout the vast fields of corn surrounding the small college town of Ames.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success.

This is Cyclone Football.

I don't expect you to know this since you follow the "other" team, but that was us in 2006. We had a senior offensive line, a QB in Bret Meyer that was considered to be the class of the Big XII (more because of the shortage of QBs in the league that year than because he was actually that good), and a very good running game. The defense was a little suspect as it was young, but the media figured the offense had the capability of scoring enough points to cover the glaring shortcomings that came with the youth and inexperience of the defense. 2006 was supposed to be the year ISU stepped out of mediocrity and become a contender in the Big XII...

We all know what happened next...

Yes, experience is a good thing, but as Jeff Dunham's puppet Peanut would say, "polish a turd, it's still a turd." If your players have 3 years of less than mediocre play, odds are that in the 4th year they're still going to be mediocre players, just with playing experience.

My Roman Villas:
Friley-Godfrey (-66|126)
Helser-Woodrow (-61|122)
Roberts-Harriman (-74|133)
Welch-Ayres (-73|133)

Re: Red Flag

Im just excited that Iowa will probably have Shonn Greene and Jake C added to a poor to average Oline.

Greene was nothing, Jake was nothing, and Iowa's Oline has been nothing too.

I feel bad for Iowa fans banking on TONS of improvement from an Oline that gave up 1000000 sacks last year. Listen folks.. improvements on the Oline rarely happen by just giving guys extra years in the system. Without a lot of new faces, it is going to be tough.

Bryan Bulaga, Dan Doering and Rob Bruggeman will prove that wrong.
