Red Flag

Isn't 14 walkons in your 2 deep considered a red flag for a bad season? I guess Ive never added ours up, but wow.. 14

Where are you getting your numbers? I count only 3 former walkons in the Cyclones spring 2 deep.

Re: Red Flag

2-deeps are pretty irrelevant this early.

These guys were left off the 2-deeps due to injuries:

Bulaga LT
Olsen LG
Eubanks C
Moeaki TE
Myers TE
DJK WR

These 2 aren't on campus yet:

Greene RB
Spievey CB

You can pretty much pencil every single one of those players into a starting role once the season starts.

So...that makes 6 walk-ons, and 2 of them are kickers.

Me = not worried.

No, you can't. All of those guys have been injured more than they've been healthy in their entire college careers. Well, all except for Greene who has been academically ineligibile more than he's been eligible for his entire career. If you haven't been able to depend on them being durable enough to play for the past 1-3 years, it's pretty foolish to expect anything different this year.

Re: Red Flag

Or perhaps it's a sign that your highly touted scholarship guys have flopped and/or fallen off the radar and some walk-ons are on the verge of earning a scholarship.

Re: Red Flag

That's not a good sign at all for Iowa.

Re: Red Flag

I guess I see it as more of a notice to scholarship guys. Two deeps don't mean anything this early so why not get a free kick in the butt to the guys that are supposed to be on that list.

No offense, but you have no idea what you're talking about here.

With the exception of Eubanks and Moeaki (who have only been injured once) all these rest of them have been pretty healthy. That's like saying we can't rely on Arnaud this year because he got hurt last year. It makes no sense. None of those guys have a history of getting injured. They just got really hurt one time.

Yup.

Honestly, I have no problem with who is on the depth chart. If they are good enough to be that high, whatever.

I'm just hoping for a relatively uneventful year, full of success on and off the field. If it takes walk-ons to do that, I'm all for it.

Re: Red Flag

Conklin's name surprised me quite a bit. There was no indication he was anywhere close to getting meaningful time in the defensive backfield before he transferred.

Re: Red Flag

You all need to remember that 20 hawk football players will be paroled this summer so at least half of those 14 walk-ons will be replaced by felons.

Re: Red Flag

As far as Eubanks and Moeaki being upperclassmen and missing 50% of their careers so far... They've had two years of experience and they both had season ending injuries last year. I seem to recall a guy like James Smith who has missed about 50% of his career games who we are counting on. We had tons of injuries at key positions last year as well. Most of them are freak things that occur that players don't have control over.
