Isn't this the same Gary Close that Johnny Orr got into it with during an Iowa State vs. Iowa game ?
If this would have been the case and Drake would have hired him, I would have had a tough time rooting for Drake. |

Wait a minute, ex-Hawkeye? I thought Settles was still playing after receiving an 18th year of eligibility from the NCAA.

Her highness, Sally Rodham Clubb, is a white collar welfare queen who hired a mediocre assistant who i belive was never a head coach anywhere! He is from Va and was at ASU just like her majesty. |

I never saw him sign a single book. He looked like a leper at his book signing table. I was watching because I wanted to see if he could actually sign his own name or if he would just make a big "X" or something. |

I wish them well with there hire but there are other asst coaches out there with ties to the state of Iowa and the MVC that may have been a better fit. Close is one of them. Tom Davis does have a nice coaching tree and Close could have been the next branch on it. I think there are a lot of people wondering why the hired the guy they did, Tom included. There is nothing wrong with a player standing up for a former coach. He was Settles coach for 7 years.

The era when Jess Settles was in town was the time I really didn't care for Iowa. Was Kingsberry the guy who could can 3 pointers, but was a complete jerk on and off the court? Settles himself played as hard as any player I've ever watched. They just seemed to be cocky, but didn't have the talent to back it up.
Maybe Drake should have gone after Close, but sounds like for what ever reason Drake wanted to break away from the Davis tree(which really has a checkered record.)

Gary Williams has won a national championship at Maryland.
Bruce Pearl did well at UW-Milwaukee and has made Tennessee into a national power.
Keno had a great first year.
Dr. Tom's coaching tree is not very big but it's pretty solid. What is the checkered part?
