So he has only a year left to play? He is going to have a hard time going somewhere. That would be like a 37 old average looking women with 4 kids going to the bar on a Friday night and looking for potential husbands. Wouldn't that be hard to do? (Beer goggles down please)

Wow. If Freeman's play was so "outside of the system," why the heck did Lickliter play him THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES A GAME?
Also, if you're a member of the media, it's 'much safer" to take the side of a coach, whose cooperation you depend upon for your stream of inside news and future interviews, than it is to side with a player who's leaving town anyway...

What else was he supposed to do? At one point, there were only 7 scholarship players available to play. Iowa went most of the season with only 9 guys ready to go, with only Kelly and Peterson available to play the point.

I am done responding to this thread... SH will rationalize everything...
IMO: crummy thing to do to a senior WHO YOU PLAYED 35 MINUTES OF EVERY GAME!!!! We didn't see that at ISU... Coach seems to respect those that committed to our university before his time.

Southern, just curious what you think TL will do this year at point after Peterson. I do not believe they brought in a point guard in this recruiting class other than his son who will be a walk-on. I must be forgetting someone.

Basically what it says, is that Lick had a meeting with Freeman (and all other players), and had very clear-cut explanations lined out for him. He basically told him that if he can't meet these expectations, he'd be riding the pine, and he may have better luck elsewhere.
While it may have been harsh, and I know you're going to try to belittle Lickliter and praise McD with your comparisons, but it was something that needed to be done. Lick didn't tell Freeman to leave the team, he told him buy into the system, or he won't play and he'd probably have better luck elsewhere.
I'm sorry that you think it's the wrong thing to do, but at this point in time, Lick can't take chances and play "Mr. Niceguy" with the players. He's trying to build a program, and is rewarding those who buy in. Those who don't, he lets them know what's going to happen. Buy in, or ride the pine. Simple as that.
The fact that Freeman left says to me that he wasn't either willing to change, didn't want to change, or couldn't change. Although, I wouldn't be suprised to see Anthony tucker seeing some minutes there, as well as Jake Kelly.

I mean, imagine if McDermott would've let Jiri play however he wanted to the first year, then last summer, told him it was his way or the bench? YOU DON'T DO THAT! You come in, and draw the line RIGHT AWAY.

Hawk fans had better hope they haven't repeated Minnesota's mistake: the Gophers hired Dan Monson away from Gonzaga, and when long-time assistant Mark Few "took over," the Zags not only didn't miss a beat, they got even better. We all know what happened to Minnesota under Monson.
Brad Stevens was Lickliter's top assistant at Butler for six years, and takes over this past year. Is this like Gonzaga, where the "assistant" coach was the real fuel behind the team's success? We shall find out...

He basically told him that if he can't meet these expectations, he'd be riding the pine, and he may have better luck elsewhere. Fact correction that is standard with SH posts:
Lick named captains for next year before meeting with Freeman. In selecting his captains he passed over his only senior 4-year player and the guy who played the most minutes (Freeman) in favor of a freshman who played something like 12 games total. That pretty much says Lick's mind was made up that Freeman was gone before he met with Freeman. In Freeman's own quotes there was no "my way or the highway, your choice" option offered him, it was "there's the door".
Players get run off all the time at lots of programs. Lick did it to Dan Bohall a few weeks ago. The only unusual thing here is that he did it to a guy who led his team in scoring and minutes. He must have plans to replace Freeman that will become clear to the public soon.

Some of the Hawk fans are taking a cue from D-Mac and spinning this stuff better than a professional DJ.
