I mean, a team with a #74 SOS trashing a team with a #95 SOS? Really?
Just FWIW, the Big Ten and Big 12 are seperated by an average placing of 4 spots. The average Big 12 placing is 39.5, while the Big Ten's is 43.5

Interesting comparison about teams in the top 30.
Of course we could look at it this way:
Top 10 - Big Twelve 2, Big Ten 1
Top 20 - Big Twelve 3, Big Ten 2
Spin it however you want, it doesn't change the fact that ISU is better than Iowa, ISU's schedule is tougher than Iowa's, and the Big Twelve is better than the Big Ten. |

All it means is the other teams in the big 10 are all scheduling tougher opponents than iowa... Originally Posted by SouthernHawk I mean, a team with a #74 SOS trashing a team with a #95 SOS? Really? Really. A #68 or a #71 trashing a #95 would be okay, but NOT a #74. there is a 21 team difference between Iowa State and iowa. That is NOT a small number. In no way am I saying Iowa State is playing a TUFF AS RAIN schedule, but it isn't as easy as iowa's.
FYI - Iowa State also had one of the toughest last year and iowa's was very easy once again. The fact of the matter is this is NOTHING new at iowa. I can't remember the last year where I didn't say "Wow, I wish we had iowa's schedule instead of ours."

At the end of the season, if that SOS holds true (or close to it) and Iowa falls short of 7/8 wins - man - the sky will fall in Iowa City.

Just FWIW, the Big Ten and Big 12 are seperated by an average placing of 4 spots. The average Big 12 placing is 39.5, while the Big Ten's is 43.5 Good attempt at spin, but in reality, SOS can truly only be judged at the end of each season, not looking at how teams did the previous year.
Based on that, what I do find quite amazing is that the record for UoI's opponents this year is actually BETTER than last year's. The three teams that are being replaced from last year - Syracuse, No. Ill, and W. Mich were a combined 9-27, while Maine, Pitt and Fla Int'l were 10-25. That means, Iowa could only muster a 6-6 record against teams with a 68-82 combined record.
FWIW, ISU's opponents last year had a record of 96-57. And yes, there is a reason that every one of ISU's bowl years (except the Boise Bowl year) has occurred when we have had the easier conference schedule and the same can be said of KU. When the schedule is easier, you should take advantage of it. |

FWIW, Iowa played 6 teams with winning records, ISU played 5. 4 of Iowa's teams that had losing records came in the OOC. Take that as you will, but that looks to me that the main reason Iowa is sitting so low in SOS is the extremely weak OOC schedule.
Just to head this off - yes, Iowa split the weak OOC schedule, etc...
The point is, trying to claim that the Big Ten is the reason Iowa's SOS is so weak is a very weak argument.

Top 60 - Big Ten 9, Big 12 8
There, I'll spin it. And ISU was better than Iowa for one game, the Big 12 is slightly better than the Big Ten, and ISU was a big reason Iowa's SOS was so low.

Before the season SOS don't mean much. We all know Iowa's schedule is and has been a joke these past few years and ISU's has been a top 20 schedule for the last couple. But hey when they go 7-5 with a January bowl game they are way better than us right? ........... Right? |

No, the difference is not that big, and the numbers based on SOS as well as overall OOC records last year prove that. The Big 12 had only a slight advantage over the BT in OOC winning percentage.
We can argue this all day, but this will be my last response on the subject until the next thread lures me in. I'll concede that the B12 was slightly better than the BigTen. However, the difference was not all that great.
ISU beat Iowa, so there really is no debating the better team. We can debate, again, all day who was the better team at the end of the season, but let's face it - neither one really finished on a high note.

I suppose you agree that Western Michigan has a legitimate gripe? Iowa is a big part of their poor #113 SOS ranking.
