It's my opinion that the throw-backs and the "(insert epithet) the rival" shirts are appropriate for rivalries BECAUSE no one really needs to get more fired up for a rivalry game.
My opinion is that the "color"-out games are more appropriate when the school needs to fire up their fan-base for an important game. Esp. one where the team is an underdog.
This is why discussing anything with a hawkeye fan is like wrestling with a pig.
Fine, your opinion. But let me just say that your logic in this is pretty flawed. All three examples you cited are gimmicks, primarily used to create more excitement for the game. Creating colored shirts for fans to wear is hardly different than making throw-back jerseys for players to wear,
as both will add to the excitement for the game.
And I wasn't insinuating anything. I don't know you; nor will I pretend to do so.
