Well, since he can't figure out how to beat Iowa State, the longer he stays, the better.

I agree.

I don't think he's in danger in 2008, but I think the stage is set for a departure possibly in 2009. After all, he's the Big Ten's highest paid coach and he has a 38-34 conference record including 6-10 the past two years...and he's heading into another mediocre season this year. Add to that the now 16 players arrested and total of 24 arrests in the past year, and his future doesn't look too good. The coaches hot seat blog currently has him #3:

Coaches Hot Seat Ranking

Out of their top 10 hot seat coaches going into the 2007 season, eight of them were fired. I agree with their analysis that Iowa will probably go about 6-6 in 2008 and that Kirk will be back in 2009, but it may be for his swan song.

It wouldn't hurt us to drop a letter or email to Gary Barta expressing confidence in Ferentz. I would hate to see him, or any coach who is 3-6 against ISU, lose their job.

Yeah, there aren't many of those people out there. Also, rep to you for the email idea.

Ah, lose one argument, try to start another one.

Honestly, I find it kind of funny that you seem to discount his three top ten finishes, as well as 4 straight January bowl games.

While is overall success hasn't been spectacular, he has been achieving something that a lot of schools would love to have. Let's bring up his last 5 seasons in the BT - he's 31-17 since 2002, with 2 BT championships and wins over Florida and LSU, as well as close losses to heavy favorites Florida and Texas.

I find it ironic that an ISU fans is dogging him considering...

- He 38-34 in the BT, with 2 BT championships (2 more championships than ISU has had this century, and in 7 years has only 16 fewer conference wins than the winningest football coach in ISU history, an ex-Iowa guy, had overall)

- Has placed in the top 10 three times at Iowa (three more times than ISU has this century)

- Big Ten coach of the year twice, National coach of the year

- 61-49 record at Iowa, with a 49-25 record since 2002

- Has only 3 losing seasons at Iowa in 9 years there

- Road wins against 5 ranked opponents (ISU hasn't had one since 1992)

I really hate to dog ISU, and I apologize to 99% of the board (rational ISU fans). I respect what Chizik is doing, and think that there is reason for optimism. But this makes it really hard for somebody to make a case for getting rid of him.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

Would Barta have the stones to get rid of Ferentz if it came to that?

Are you including the 7-5 January "We all know that clueless Iowa Fans travel well" bowl???

And that the three top ten finishes happened a millenium ago, in coaching terms????

Man, I like the way you think. Especially since he has so much trouble beating ISU.

Re: What season will be Kirk Ferentz' last at Iowa?

Personally, I don't forget about his 3 top 10 finsihes at all! The guy is a ridiculous good coach, and recruiter. On top of that, he seems to be a better man. I think the thing that got him in this position was his loyalty to his coaches, most importantly his coordinaters. KOK and Norm Parker are both outdated in their systems, evem though they worked until 03 amd even. 04. College football changed quickly, and Iowa didn't. I think he felt pressure to go after higher level recruits, that may have had some baggage. He decided not to change from his phillosophy, so to compete he went after a few iffy characters. They will be ok, but probably won't reach the level they were at.

I'm the biggest clone fan, and I think we have Kirks #. I still respect him, but I think in the next year he will have to make a change at the OC and DC, or else he will go within a couple. He was offered the u of M job twice, and didn't accept for a reason. He thinks he will get it turned around in IC, we shall see.....go clones!

Seriously, all smack aside, I see the Hawkeyes surprising a lot of people this year. It just seems that when a team like UofI goes through a rocky offseason, and everyone looks for them to suck, they use that to overachieve and do well.

The Hawks will do well with their ridiculously easy schedule and the Kool-aid will be drunk by all. He will be fine.

If the mess in IC goes to trial it could get real ugly for Kirk. Depending on what "details" come out, this could create a firestorm in the media that is comparable or greater than the one that took LE down.

IF that happens, the University may not have a choice but to have a mutual parting of ways.

With their brutally tough schedule tis year (cough, cough) they wil make a bowl game this year. (Insight or Alamo) Hawk fans will once again be able to proclaim that they are a national power and all will be well in Iowa City.

The trend is your friend, and the trend hasn't been very friendly to KF the past few seasons (on or off the field). With his history, one good season should put him back in the good graces of HN. If the current struggles were to continue for a couple more years, it would look more like the standard than an aberration. If I were KF I would hope for a very good season either this year or next to shut up the opposition.

The majority of Hawkeye fans think he is God no matter what happens. He laughs his butt off at all of them when he's at home counting his money and winning 6 games a year.
