Hawkeye arrogance starts young...

With apologies to SH and JonDMiller, I have to get something off my chest. I have 3 young daughters and the oldest is in 2nd grade. Today, they had a "sports" theme at her school, so she wore her Cyclone cheerleading outfit. When she got home, she told me about the constant ribbing that she got because she was wearing Cyclone clothing instead of Hawkeye wear.

Now, this would normally not frustrate me - I'd just blow it off - I mean it's just a few 2nd graders right?! It's just that the entire year this has happened. Nothing down-right mean is said, it's just the prevaling mindset that "how dare you wear or sport anything ISU - because the Hawks rule everything." I asked my daughter if she ever gives out any of what she is receiving - she doesn't [I'll have to teach her a left hook and a right upper-cut for the next time it happens: )]. Anyway - I think this is just a microcosm of the adult world. There seems to be far less harrassment when Hawks sport their colors than when Cyclone fans do.

Just thought I'd vent.

My mom's a Kindergarten teacher, and attempts to cancel out the Hawk bias at an early age.

I remember when I was in grade school kids would pick on me about being a Cyclone fan. They had a reason to then but now they really have to reason to rib ISU fans, except for the fact they dont know better and they see their parents do it. Has your daughter ever been to and ISU game? How about the kids that pick on her?

Hehe, growing up in Coralville, the kids are the same. I always hear plenty of "Iowa State sucks", even after we beat them. And I respond, "then what does that make Iowa" and then they freeze and shut up.

Arnaud is a beast.

I see that with alot of kids these days. I really think the kids that do this are brainwashed by their parents. I think their parents are insecure and do it themselves as adults....

Insecurity sucks doesn't it. I'm still amazed by the amount of anti-cyclone that you get from Hawks. Look at license plates, message board screen names. On the ISU side it is predominantly more pro-ISU than anti-Hawk. All that says to me is that they don't have enough confidence in themselves to ignore us. Doesn't take a psychology major to figure out what it means when you're too worried about something else that you'd rather put it down than worry about yourself.

edit - sorry that was me not her....wrong login.

I've told the story on here before about how I was a Hawk "fan" for a few years in elementary school because a kid in my class had made fun of me for wearing an ISU jacket. Luckily, I eventually saw the light. And the kid who made fun of me ended up going to ISU too, although he never did graduate...

Gotta blame this on the parents... I can't even remember caring about another kids favorite team when I was little.

Yes, she has been to a few (football and men's basketball). But, no, the kids that razz her have not - although I am sure that they saw last year's EIU-ISU football and basketball games on TV.

-but it sure doesn't shut them up!

BTW, when she was 18 months old and dirtied her diaper, I had taught her to say - "hawkeye in my diaper." She used this phrase for a couple months - then I was forced to teach her differently - my wife made me change : ).

Hmm... Since you put it that way, maybe I should seriously be teaching my daughter some boxing techniques or martial arts moves. I think I'll go rent Rocky I-XII and all the Chuck Norris videos - she'll be prepared the next time some Hawkeye urchin crosses her. "I pity the fool..." (Mr. T - Rocky III)

I love the diaper story. I have a grandson about that age. Just gives me ideas!
