Troy Dannen hired at UNI

Troy Dannen Named UNI Director of Athletics :: He will assume his new duties at UNI in July.

What's everyone think about this one?

Go Cyclones! - Go Kohawks!

Maybe the state of Iowa can finally merge the girls and boys athletic union like the 49 other states in the country.

Hmmm...No biggie

All I can tell you is that UNI fans are definitely upset with this choice.

From Hartzell leaving UNI, to them hiring the only candidate without prior Athletic Department experience, our administration is in more trouble than we thought.

I find this curious? Pushing out a popular, successful AD and replacing him with this? I say lookout UNI baseball! He was brought in to cut the budget and that will result in fewer sports! Just my feeling...

I can't believe we can't merge these associations! We need to get those old-timers out on the womens side! You know...those same guys who still miss the days of 6-player girls basketball!

Re: Troy Dannen hired at UNI

Looks like a solid hire to me. An Alum with some good management experience.

Hartzel was popular, but I think it was probably a good change for both sides of that equation.

That is exactly the problem, Hartzell's requests were not that outlandish. So to let him go after all that he has done (from hiring successful coaches like McDermott and Farley to making the McLeod Center a reality) was foolish.

Many Panther fans are afraid they hired Dannen because he was cheaper than the other candidates and won't butt heads with the administration. Regardless of UNI's good baseball season, its likely its on its way out.

This doesn't even start on UNI's issues with Title IX compliance.

Dannon did say he had some issues on gender equality to work on in the Rag this morning.

Re: Troy Dannen hired at UNI

Does anyone really care who the AD at UNI is? I don't.

As for 6 on 6 girls basketball...it was a far better game than the 5 on 5 girls game is today...much more exciting and compelling and much more popular. I remember crowds of 4,000 at the Fieldhouse in Spencer for district / regional finals. I think Lynne Lorenzen averaged 60-70 points a game for Ventura before signing with ISU. It was very common for all of the good teams to have girls (their forwards) shoot FTs at a 85-95% clip. Games were typically high scoring and quite exciting.

Give me the choice of taking in Sibley v. Melvin back in the late 70s or a WNBA game today and I would choose Sibley v. Melvin every day and twice on Sunday!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

6 player sucks.

"Seiler, on the option...trying to the turn the corner...HE POPS FREE to 40, to midfield, to the 40, to the 30, to the 20, inside the 10. Marvin Seiler almost breaks it all the way 77 yards to the Nebraska 3 yard line."

PBS recently ran a very good documentary on the history of 6 on 6. It is a good history lesson on the state of Iowa, not just girls athletics. Iowa was way out in front of the rest of the nation in regards to girls sports. Whether you are pro or con 6-6 as an Iowan it is worth your time to watch.

AGREE! Plus it is demeaning to girls! And how many girls grow up thinking "I want to be a star DEFENDER on the high school basketball team"? What a joke! 6 player basketball was NOT basketball! There are some very good girls basketball players in our state. I am glad we get to see them play the real game of basketball!

I agree about that show. Some great history about our state.

Very well put. Don't call 6-on-6 "basketball," because it's not. It made our state look SO backward...

Excellent argument, my friend! You support your position very well. You must have been one heck of a debater!
