Re: Good news for Iowa basketball fans

After we win a couple BCS bowl games in the coming years, we will be able to afford the upgrades for Hilton. As of now, I don't think Hilton is in great need of many upgrades. Not like JTS is anyway.

And this just raises the classic question of:

If an AD adds premium seating and there aren't any butts in the arena, does it generate revenue?

Says the fan of the team who wants to build a second deck to the football stadium.

In all honesty, I'm hesitant to increase capacity (and that's my understanding of what's going on), but at least within the past decade CHA has averaged 15,500 fans per game. It's not like the attendance will always be this low.

So wait... Does this mean we get to complain now that Iowa doesn't need a multi-million dollar renovation to a venue that they don't sell out? I'm somewhat confused here.

I would say yes. I don't understand why they would add seats. I guess if they're "premium" they might general more revenue much in the way of the new luxury boxes at JTS.

They are in desperate need of a practice facility though.

Desperate? Several Big 10 schools don't have dedicated b-ball practice facilities and seem to do OK - little 'ol schools like Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota. Another program of note - Kansas.

Iowa's facilities don't compare to KU or IU's. Just sayin'

Yes, and to be fair, I'm certain that all are currently planning one, or raising money for one, just like ISU and Iowa. However, much of this I believe is for the "wow factor" for recruits, the never-ending arms race...

I know UM is, and IU is building a new facility.

But what helps those teams (KU and IU) from ISU, Iowa, and UM in recruiting high profile players is their tradition. What schools don't have dripping in tradition (Ohio State), they need to make up for it with top of the line facilities.
