Today's Lesson

"silo tech(refering to ISU) would soon be dropped from the big 12 if we(iowa) stopped playing them and I would enjoy watching their athletic department crumble."

I just thought that I would share this bit of wisdom with the rest of you. This came from a poster on HR. So, make sure that you thank every hawk fan that you come across because without them, there is no ISU.

What is HR?

Sounds like a place to avoid.

Hawkeye Report. It's more or less a good place to avoid, but every once in awhile, you can find a precious gem like this one.

Ya...well Psycho Hospital, College of the Drunks (Iowa), would crumble without their only important victory of the year against the clowns...Kirk Ferentz would be fired and Gene Chizek would take over at Iowa.

Then Todd Lickliter would kick off all the athletic players and keep all the uncoordinated kids on the team so as Lickliter quotes " Won't beat everyone and make it a fair competition for college basketball...Iowa needs to share the love".

See how easy that is?

Yes, because we elected this one guy to represent all hawk fans, and we all agree with everything he says. Keep believing that.

Every fanbase has an equal share of idiots that say stupid things. This guy is apparently one of those idiots.

Did it have something to do with Iowa paying Iowa State 616,383.48 dollars for the Clones trip to Kinnick last year, which is 23K more than ISU got from Iowa in 2006, and 35K more than they got from Iowa in 2004?

Maybe that's where the "athletic department crumble" came from.

Because I am sure without that extra 58K over 4 years the department would be in shambles. No real, good argument to support the original statement. ~4% increase over two years time is a real jaw dropping number.

I will be sooooooooooooooooo glad when the contract changes and I won't have to listen to Hawk fans ***** and whine about this topic. Both school's AD signed the agreement. While the current agreement favors ISU it is hardy going to (or break) either schools athletic budget.

Where are you getting 58K? Even when you factor in the 300K that ISU gave Iowa in 2007, it still easily amounts to a 250K profit for Iowa State, and it's probably higher than that.

The real figures are a 591K payout to ISU in 2006, and a 581K payout to ISU in 2004, of which Iowa receives roughly 1/2 in return when the game is in Ames.

Had to figure those numbers really meant something since you chose to single them out. The 616K shouldn't really be an issue since it has been an agreed upon contract, my guess is Iowa is bringing in plenty of money by playing this game in order to sign a contract that pays the visiting team 600+. The value must be there for the UofI somewhere or the AD that signed that contract may need to sit in on a finance class or two. I just hate the argument that the payout greatly favors one team over the other.

How is something that is factually true an argument? The payouts for this series are based on attendance, with the visiting team getting 20% of the gate.

If your argument is that Iowa really isn't losing a whole lot when you consider that the whole gate was over 3 million dollars, and that they have 6 other home games, then I would buy it.

The fact remains that even when you factor in what ISU pays Iowa when the game is in Ames, Iowa loses upwards of 300K a year to play this game.

That is what I am saying, the logic from the original post about UI supporting the ISU AD is faulty since the same could be true about the other games that Iowa hosts. The revenue that this game brings in for Iowa has to be higher overall(marketing, vendors, etc...) than it would if they were bringing in someone else minus the traditional big boys, which I couldn't see the UI bringing in to replace the ISU game. This game is bigger to the fans in the state of Iowa than the "lose-lose" scenario UI fans want to realize.

Doesn't the fact that Kinnick hold more people factor into this equation? Especially since a game with ISU is a guaranteed sell out?
