Wait - you don't think A&M has been a huge loss for the Big 12? You're kidding, right? Houston is basically an SEC town now.
We should have listened to Boren when he said Louisville would be a good addition for the conference.

The poster never suggested that.

Louisville is a flippin commuter school. Boren was an idiot to want them instead of WVU or TCU.

Is there a team limit for the conference to remain a conference? If the PAC takes the 4 teams they were originally going to take and WV goes to the SEC is the Big 12 still a conference with 5 teams and can those 5 teams reap the benefits of the GoR?

They would grab 5-7 other teams and the Big 12 would still exist. And they would still hold the television rights to those 5 teams. So every time those other 5 have a home game, Big 12 gets the TV money, plus all the TV money from the teams still in the Big 12. That is what media rights mean.

I am sure that the other teams would try to negotiate to get the rights back, but it will be a huge settlement. And rights are not usually arbitrated like an exit fee. They are negotiated and the person who owns the rights in this case would not settle for any less than they would be getting by keeping the rights.

That is the reason why these teams are not going to take the chance at losing out on the potential of $200-$300 million right now. It would be plain stupid and they know it.

The poster might not have said those exact words but all of you "cord cutting" , "alacarte is coming" tv phrophets all of a sudden pretend the two most popular leagues are somehow not going to be able to profit in a new environment. This tends to be a very simplistic view of things, and the conferences that control the content with the most demand are still going to find ways to profit one way or another.

I think the Rutgers expansion long term can work out very nicely for them. Putting them in a P5 league with OSU, Michigan, PSU, MSU regularly on the schedule is going to give them a chance to grow to be a true P5 team. New Jersey produces a lot of high school recruits, which was part of the reason for adding them and Maryland. The B1G only has one state Ohio that produces more than those two states in terms of football players. Pennsylvania might be close but probably does not in most years produce as many as New Jersey and Maryland. As well as having a lot of B1G alumni in the NYC area will create more interest overall in the Rutgers product.

Agreed. Cord cutting harms all leagues, including the Big 12, regardless of who controls Tier 3 content, because the bulk of any inventory's value is in Tier 1 and Tier 2, which are both held by TV networks. Agree also that it is only common sense that the most valuable leagues can always expect to have the most valuable media contract when the dust settles.

Louisville gets 52-53k per football game and 20-21k per basketball game. Call it a commuter school all you want, Louisville (and Pittsburgh) absolutely should have gotten invites to the Big 12 to get to 12 members when we had the chance.

At the time of replacing aTm and Mizzou, many thought that TCU was a good choice as they had a very strong football program, and had just been to BCS bowls. WVU was a BCS team as well Texas wanted a Texas school replacing aTm, so TCU got the offer. West Virginia was wanted by TV networks over Louisville. And a number of the lesser schools, like Iowa State, were salivating at dividing the Money only 10 ways instead of 11 or 12 ways.

The Big 12 is not going away. Texas and/or Oklahoma are not leaving. At some point the Big 12 may expand. But does not have to in order to survive. The Big 12 should not expand to just expand. That would be foolish.

ACC could definitely be the odd man out in the future for BCS Football Playoff. Perceived as the weakest conference, it took an undefeated season for defending champion FSU to make the playoffs last year.
