Either he's awesome, or our LB's are not good.
wow. Who else do we have at Mike? Maybe Joel is a total stud, but I see this as rather concerning for our LB talent/depth
Um........I'm not going to lie. This kinda scares me about our potential Defensive talent.
He's got the speed, size and toughness to be good. Should also have a great understanding of how offenses work and look as they are executing plays too.
This is both very surprising, and a problem I somewhat wish we didn't have, at the same time.
I mean, this could be good, but I'm guessing it's bad.
Something people either forget or didn't know is that Joel was offered a scholarship to play LB at Nebraska. Say what you will about them, but they don't just offer whoever. So, Joel making the switch and taking over the reigns isn't really all that surprising.
This is alarming, however Joel is an outstanding athlete, and I hope he exceeds in every way what we've gotten out of that position since probably George graduated.
the two Mike linebackers we had on our depth chart, Kane Seeley and Brian Mills, are no longer on the team due to graduation and moving on. I'm guessing Joel is athletic and probably sees the game slower/understands a little better than Tymar Sutton right now. I assume Sutton will still get plenty of game time and develop during the year.

that is all true... but we have a #1 Mike with zero playing experience in College, on the defensive side of the ball.
This doesn't seem that alarming. We've been playing without linebackers for a little while now.
God, I hope they keep some packages for him at QB too. How awesome would that be to have your middle linebacker taking the snap and bulldozing a middle linebacker?
Gotta say, with someone like Joel that's played (counting his RS season) 4 years of college QB and it was part of his job to study defenses, I can't say that I'm at all concerned.
I'd still say a little "surprising" but not "shocking". However, good points IMHO.

He was more than serviceable as a QB, but I think he'll flourish as a LB.
