Is this seriously the best these singers/songwriters can come up with? I like beat, it's kind of catchy - but hot damn, those lyrics do not jam.

Absolutely. Has anyone actually read the lyrics to Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light"?
Popular misconception. Bruce Springsteen wrote it. Manfred Mann's earth band just sang a popular version of it.
