I looked at how many bonus points Penn State put up and it's crazy. The style that Cael's kids wrestle right now is amazing. To put up 32 bonus points in the NCAA tournament is incredible. That's an additional champ and another AA's worth of points.

I hope we can get some wrestlers that look to score big points every match!

The biggest thing his program has going for him is he has the most talented wrestlers. Say what you want about aggressive style, or coaching aggression, but the better wrestler is usually aggressive because they have more talent.

I have no ill will toward Cael, but that might change if Dresser is able to bring ISU back. Right now, I'm just happy that Iowa is getting it handed it to them by a Cyclone. I'm halfway hoping Cael breaks all of Gable's coaching records. That would drive him and Hawkeye fans crazy.

Checked the stats and this is the longest dry spell without a title for iowa for just under 50 years, figure the hawk fans should be getting restless.

Certainly the program attracts talented wrestlers, but how do you explain the Joseph win over Martinez, or Nickal over Dean? For that matter, all the finalists are incredibly talented wrestlers, but Penn St. just went five and 0.

Hawnh? What are you saying?

Since roughly 1970, this is the longest title dry spell, team wise, for the Hawks. I know they are getting ticked at pSu and Cael, how long before they start turning it inward. I see Cael running the streak for another 3 years.

Iowa won their first NCAA title in 1975.

They have not won a title in the last seven years (last win 2010).

They also did not win it from 2001 through 2007.

If you're sayin' some of the sheen has been lost from the vaunted Hawkeye program, I totally agree.

This drought might be frustrating for the hok faithful, but you can be sure that many are breathing a sigh of relief that Cael is doing this at PSU rather than ISU. Makes me sick that Cael didn't stay at ISU - especially leaving the year that he did. Had he stayed at least one more year, I believe that we would have had a NC. Oh well. Hopefully Dresser gets the ship righted soon!

Iowa also just graduated a lot of points. Gilman, Clark, Meyer, and Brooks were all seniors. And Stoll probably will never be the same even if he is able to come back so he's essentially gone as well. That leaves them just Sorenson and Kemerer for sure things next season. They're pretty heavily invested in the current recruits (kind of like we were). If those guys don't pan out in the next season or two then it'll heat up. But I think Clark winning bought Brands a lot of goodwill for now.

Oh what could have been.

People can hate on Cael all they want but the fact of the matter is, his style is great for the sport.

Agreed. Glad to see ISU is honoring him. He gave us 4 perfect years of wrestling and honestly was fun to watch him coach. Not going to get into the he said/she said of why he left, but bottom line is its too bad there wasn't a way to keep him.

However, excited for the future to see what we can do moving forward.

I'll chime in. Brands would be on the hot seat if not for his recent recruiting successes. Iowa will be in somewhat rebuild mode next year, but I think back competing for a national title in 2019. PSU is a juggernaut right now.

I disagree. Many places get blue chips recruits in the door, and while most get good results, the hardest thing to do is get guys into the 'elite' class. Cael gets the right guys in the door, sure, but its the development that has separated PSU from everyone else.

Pretty easy to see why they are dominant!

This could have been done in Ames if Cael would have had a little patience. He got tired of Brands. Also it did not hurt that (in addition to the increased salary PSU paid) he got another $250k per year from a PSU alum that is an attorney... he put Cael on retainer and gave him the annual dough in exchange for Cael to give speeches.

Great info! I'd love to see how OSU, tOSU, and other contenders stacked up with the same stats

Our lineup was (in their senior class):
125: #173
133: #83
141: #5
149: #47
157: #80
165: #143
174: UR (I could have sworn Spoon was a top 100 recruit)
184: UR
197: #56
HWT: UR

Simmons was #31 in 2015, Boston was #31 in 2014
