Held hostage in Iran back in 1980. ISU guy and was a VEISHEA grand Marshall when I was in college.

The names of the hostages were in the basketball programs for years.

ISU briefly had "T.A." and "T.S." on the helmets in 1991, for Anderson and Thomas Sutherland.

Sutherland, also an ISU grad, was another of the hostages in Lebanon.

Jim Knott, now there’s a name that brings back memories.

I've never followed the news, whether I was young or old. Terry Anderson is a name that stood out to me when I saw this thread title. Thank you for sharing.

The two ISU alums that were held in Lebanon were big issues on campus in the 1980s when I was there. We held vigils, there were articles, forums, panels...

Through a mutual friend, I actually got to speak with Terry Anderson on the phone once. He was very proud of his ISU journalism degree and spoke fondly of his time in Ames. Our mutual friend raved about his kindness and character; he could have been very bitter about spending so much time as a prisoner but didn't seem to be.

Rest in peace, Terry.

Why did I think he was held in Iran during the Carter years? Also I recall him at Veishea. What year was he grand Marshall?

Iowa State rang the carillon bells of the campanile annually for each month of his captivity. Apparently one year Anderson and Sutherland were listening to Voice of America and they heard bells. They were broadcasting the tolling of the bells and the two hostages heard it.

The news was also on BBC. I was more familiar with Terry White and didn't realize that they were together as hostages.
