This will be a quick post summarizing today’s game against the Cornhuskers. Fortunately, our last meeting with them is another victory but one laden with nail biting and angst.
The first half started off about as well as one could hope with one exception. Zimm was again in street clothes. Rumor has it that she has a bug and hopefully is on the downhill side of it. If she can score we need the help as our inside game again struggled. But I digress…
The first half started off with the two teams trading baskets back and forth and ending up tied 8-8 before ISU would go on a brief run to go up by double digits before the huskers would scratch back to forge a halftime tie at 38 apiece. The first half was a three point shooting clinic as both sides were bombing from long range. Iowa State would make 8 to NU’s 7. That is a whole game’s worth right there. Even more impressive is that Loz and Jess were contributing from downtown. Perhaps Jess is starting to find some confidence out there. Throughout the game all of the guards would contribute and make themselves a threat as Cole, Loz, Jess, Harris, and Bolt all hit from long range. Uncharacteristically, Prins would go 0-2 on the day.
Fortunately, NU’s shooting would slow down markedly in the second half as they only hit 2-12. ISU wasn’t exactly shooting lights out, going 5-13, but every one seemed to come at a critical juncture in the game. Some heading off Nebraska pushes or short leads. The big piece was free throws. While we missed 5 in the last half, we made enough to seal the win and move on to play again tomorrow in another rematch with KSU.
Bolt was back on fire today hitting for 15 points, but it was Loz that was shooting like her life depended on it. She put up 18 shots on the day and tallied 23 points. Where has this been all season? Others contributed well as Jess continues to earn her starting position with several early key baskets and a total of 8 points and 4 boards. Pop had a nice game with 10 points and 11 boards including another patented strong rebound that resulted in a technical foul when her elbow bounced off a NU player’s nose.. Not pretty shooting but man she gets the job done. Prins on the other hand really struggled going 1-10 from the field and getting into foul trouble that forced her to sit almost half of the game.
It was a struggle and obviously NU shot the lights out in the first half, but a win is a win. One point or 20, we get to move on. The next game is going to require better front to back defense and continued scoring from our ladies. The bigs just need to find the hoop more and hopefully Zimm will be back to add another threat there.
See you all tomorrow at 1:30.
