Interesting Info on Cyclones.tv Volleyball Broadcasts
I've had a question since the beginning of the volleyball season as to why they have live video broadcast of all the home games, yet don't allow you to watch a replay of the game at any point in time. While I can see most games live on there, there are a few I know I'll have to miss and was curious why they don't show the replays. You'd think it would be really easy.
Anyways, I sent the Athletic Department this exact question and got a somewhat surprising response from them. I figured it was something technical or rights oriented, but it isn't either. Here is the exact response for those of you interested:
"Yes, because coach Johnson-Lynch does not want our opponents to be able to scout us off our broadcasts."

That makes some sense. I'm not going to argue with anything CJL thinks is best. She clearly knows what she's doing.

I'm pretty sure CJL has earned her right to call the shots. While it may suck a little big, if she wants it that way, she can have it that way as far as I'm concerned.

That's awesome. Gotta love HCCJL.
They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson. -

Well...with the right software (which certainly isn't difficult to come by), it's pretty straightforward to capture live video streams. Anybody who needs to scout the team probably has that software, a subscription to cyclones.tv, and is capturing the games as they are played.
It would seem rather counterproductive to start a subscription-based network and then not put up the content that people want to watch. My guess would be that this policy is changed in the future.

Yeah, just capture the video, burn a DVD and start handing them out.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Until Women's volleyball becomes more of a premier sport and a big money earner, I think CJL can still call the shots on this. No one is going to drop or join Cyclones.tv because women's volleyball games aren't saved and available for replay.

Given the budgets of most volleyball programs, the technical know-how required to do what you describe, and the time and effort required, I doubt there are many teams doing this.

Volleyball is exactly the kind of sport some people will join for because it isn't available on other outlets. I certainly wouldn't subscribe yearly for football which I can get on TV. Volleyball games is one of the points that sold me on getting cyclones.tv

I would imagine that at some point Coach's team was talking to a school about tape exchange and got turned down. Perhaps Coach thinks that they got an ISU tape from another source and is a little wary of it now. Frankly, if a team is going to use tape to prepare for another team, fair play demands that they make tape of their own team available. Not all coaches subscribe to fair play.

All the software needed is free. Heck, webcam to Flash Live Media encoder to Justin.tv protected account = videos for later. Webcam = $50 (or any digital video camera with output) (Screen capturing software would likely replace a webcam and is also free)

I was going to say something about Ms. Hockaday and the benefit of re-broadcasts, but decided not to...
