    A building for volleyball.

I thought I would do this. Seems like a debate that might gain steam. I would like to see it happen because it might help the volleyball team. The reason, I enjoy watching volleyball, but would prefer to threaten for a national title. I think we have a coach under the right circumstances who could do that. There is the assertion that successful programs that are women's lose less money than non-successful programs.

We did it for soccer. The least we could do is build a new facility or retrofit an old one for arguably one of the best programs the athletic department has.

If they did it (and it is probably cost prohibitive), then it would make sense to have it as a building for volleyball and wrestling and possibly gymnastics as well.

I thought it would be nice to build another building just like the basketball. Give half to volleyball and half to wrestling or gymnastics.

Bingo, make a 3,000-4,000 seat multipurpose venue for non-revenue sports.

Gymnastics might not work due to their space needs being different, but you could easily build an arena that worked for both wrestling and volleyball and kill two birds with one stone.

I wanted to say the same, are there some sports that we could bring back which would add to revenue rather than take away? But that probably needs to be on another thread.

    Re: A building for volleyball.

The softball and soccer complexes were desperately needed. What they had in the past probably helped keep recruits away.

Appearance is everything. The old soccer field and softball field were in two terrible locations. To get to softball, you had to walk through a run-down baseball field (that was one of the best fields in the nation before we let it rot) and to get to soccer you have to drive through MWL and Lied and had the view of Lincoln Way and University Boulevard.

Now, the new complex has beautiful trees, brings all outdoor sports that have fans (sorry, Tennis) in one place, and it's hidden from streets (the Softball field has wind stoppers on the outfield fence)

If I'm a recruit going to these facilities, I'm going to be blown away.

As for volleyball, we could use our own building, but we don't need one now. I think 2 or 3 years from now if we continue our success, then we should get one. Look at how long it took basketball to get out of Hilton for practices.

Baseball (southeast) and hockey (far north) are the only sports that we don't have that are revenue positive anywhere. But, I don't think either of these sports would be revenue positive in Iowa.

    Re: A building for volleyball.

Well wrestling doesn't deserve anything more than what they got with the renovation at the rec center, mainly because they suck (but I blame the coach for that). They will have to address swimming, gymnastics, volleyball at some point. With all the new money coming in, I'm sure these sports are on the list for facility improvements, but it takes more the TV money, it takes donors.
If you take away first base, they'll just go find a new ballpark to play in.

The only viable option is to do what other schools have done: remodel and retrofit the old basketball arena (in our case, the armory) and make it the VB venue. But that would take millions and millions of $$$ - that we don't have.

I actually like volleyball at Hilton.

I'm sure another building would be excellent. I just happen to like Hilton for volleyball.
