Its either us or somewhere where she is from, I'm really getting excited about this, I could see us going along ways if she jumps on board with the twister sisters, hopefully mom was impressed aswell, can anyone say national champions. Possibly in the next three years ?
It would be nice to land a talented recruit from across the Atlantic. Getting the young ladies to come here when they live in Iowa seems to be a problem.
I do not see this as a problem. First we need to recruit people with the skills needed, who fit our program. They also have to want to play & live in Ames. Some people want to get away from home to go to school, some want to go to a specific school (they think it will look good when they go for a job Stanford comes to mind) and some do not want the pressure of playing in front of a large crowd of people from their home state. How many times have we seen a local player who does not live up to the hype of high school! I trust BF to get the people he needs to keep the program going up.
Get used to kids going out-of-state to school. With the AAU play now, more kids are getting out to see the country, and kids can see the grass as greener on the other side of the state line. In addition, cell phones, skype, etc. make it much easier (and cheaper) to keep in touch back home, so the longing to be close to home is not as much a factor.
Let's hold back expectations here. Not all players from another country work out. Aus was an exception but her big plus was being a foreign exchange student who got to play a year of high school basketball in the states. On the other side we also had Claire Rockall who was clearly not a D1 player.
Rockall was somewhat of a diamond-in-the-rough type that Fennelly took a chance on. She was the best PG (maybe even best player) in her age group in Ireland, but Ireland is one of the lesser countries in Europe for basketball. Her team was 11th at the U18 Div B championships. The best 16 countries are Div A, so Ireland was roughly the 27th best in Europe.
Vanloo is one of the top PG of her age group in all of Europe. Her U17 team placed 4th at the world championships (behind USA, France, and China), and she led her team in scoring at 16.6 PPG (4th overall) in the tournament.
Have we heard anymore on this possible recruit?
