Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
I'll spell out the details as I get to them.
Guaranteed salary: $450k at the start (07-08 season) going up $25k every season. So he made $525k this year and it'll be $550k next year.

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
At the end of the day... I think BF's loyalty is due in large part to the people. Let's face it... he could be successful as a coach just about anywhere. He most likely has already had opportunities to make more money elsewhere and turned it down to stay. I think that is in large part to the fine people at ISU from Geoffrey on down the line to the people in the Athletic Department. Add to that the fact that Iowa State fans show up in large numbers to support the team and BF and that goes a long long way. He took over the ISU job when it was an absolute disaster of a program and he has built it into what it is today from the ground up. There is a reason that ISU has gone to 11 NCAA Tournaments since 1997, there is a reason ISU has been on the doorstep of cracking into the Final Four multiple times, there is a reason that ISU continues to draw crowds that rank them in the top 3 or 4 in the NCAA..... and that reason is BF.
BF is one of those guys that will never pay for a drink anywhere he runs into a Clone fan for the rest of his life. Leaving those kinds of relationships and support behind would be a really, really, really hard thing to do.

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
Bonuses:
$25k per Big 12 championship
$25k per Big 12 tournament championship
$10k per NCAA Tournament appearance
$15k per first round win
$25k per Sweet 16
$25k per Elite eight
$25k per Final Four
$50k per championship game
$100k per championship
Those NCAA numbers accumulate. An NCAA championship would be $10k+$15k+$25k+$25k+$25k+$50k+$100k = $250k in bonuses (not counting any Big 12-related ones).

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
If he's fired without cause, ISU pays him $225k per each remaining year on the contract.
I can't find any buyout payable to ISU if he were to leave on his own.

Steven's supposedly going to be a GA next year, so he'll be around next year still.

Surprised....I have to agree with you but with one qualification.
"surprised if any COACH leaves anymore"....Jamie Pollard is definitely NOT leaving thats for sure...
You can count on one thing for sure...Any successful football or mens b-ball coach that wants to leave is Out The Door thats for Sure!!!!
We're a steppingstone and canNOT keep a good football or basketball coach....
HellsBells Boys and Girls...Even Greg McDermott left us...How embarrassing is that?
We never got a chance to FIRE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! -

I can't find any buyout payable to ISU if he were to leave on his own. With a lifetime contract firing him without cause would be insane. That being said... that language would be pretty worry free to put into his contract since I don't think there is anyway in hell that ISU would ever want to fire him. His track record of success speaks for itself.

Not to mention, he has vested a lot of time and energy into building WBB in the Big 12 and takes a lot of pride in that. But you never know when someone needs a career shift.

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
Taking into account bonuses, this is what he's made per season since the contract was signed in 2007 according to the contract stipulations:
07-08: $450k base + $25k bonus = $475k
08-09: $475k base + $75k bonus = $550k
09-10: $500k base + $50k bonus = $550k
10-11: $525k base + $10k bonus = $535k
11-12: $550k base + ??? bonus
If Wisconsin came by waving around a long-term contract worth $700k guaranteed, things could get interesting. Are they willing to pay that?

Honestly... with his boys getting into the profession I don't see him leaving. I have no idea how long BF wants to continue coaching but he has enough credibility built up at ISU that if he wants to groom one of them to be his successor at ISU that could more then likely be arranged.

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
They want him because they know all our coaches can win national championships(just not at ISU, unfortunately).

Re: Fennelly Rumored a Target Candidate for WI Job
Wisconsin State Journal is also reporting Bill Fennelly as one of the candidates.
I hope BF ends this speculation soon. UW-Green Bay plays Michigan State in NCAA tonight | NEWS -
