Big 12 tournament
Well, they did it. The women's tournament is officially separated from the menu AND being moved back on a rotation to Dallas and Oklahoma City. My personal thoughts? Biggest mistake the conference could make. Attendance will go down for both tournaments. Dallas sucks as a venue. No one from Texas attends. Too far for the northern schools. What does everyone think?

Re: Big 12 tournament
There are no nothern schools anymore (except ISU). Might as well move everything to Dallas. When Mizzou, NU, and Colorado ran away, that was the end of the tourney in KC.

This is right on sadly. I may make OKC once in awhile but never Dallas. Sad that trips to KC are soon going to become extinct. -
Re: Big 12 tournament
We went to OKC the last time it was there and it is not a bad trip. Dallas is futher but we will have to make the trip when needed to follow our Cyclones. The biggest mistake is splitting them up, womens & mens tourney. Some people who now do both will only choose one to attend as the costs go up. But we all know womens basketball is the little sister to the Big 12.

Re: Big 12 tournament
It's ridiculous to separate the tournaments. There was discussion some time back but did not appear to be acted on. When has all this been happening behind the scenes and by who? Will they overlap in dates in different cities? And that's why the women's tourney has to move out of KC, because the men will be there?
ISU will have a great team for 2013. Maybe a conference championship caliber team. Hopefully fans will find a way to get to Dallas.

Is this a permanent move, or just waiting for contracts to run out?

"Following the 2011-12 season the men's and women's basketball championships will become stand alone events, taking place in separate cities. The men's championship is under contract, and will continue in Kansas City through 2014. Starting in 2013 the women's championship will be held in Dallas at the American Airlines Center, with Oklahoma City playing host in 2014 at the Chesapeake Energy Center. With the change, the women's basketball championship will take place the Friday-Monday preceding the men's championship, which will continue its Wednesday-Saturday format."

Re: Big 12 tournament
Not a good move, the women's tourney will struggle in Dallas, and OKC as a stand alone event. First off, while AAC is a great facility, it is was to big for the Big 12 tourney. The beauty of Municipal Auditorium was the size. The women need to play in a building that seats around 10k. Second, the only south schools who travel are Baylor and OU, so lots of empty seats. Third, a Friday-Monday format is pathetic. What we have now is ideal with both championships on Saturday, leaving Sunday as a travel day, or for some going home on Saturday.
With this move, they have reverted back to the old days of the Big 8 when the women played in Salina, KS and and the men in KC, only now we get Dallas/OKC for the women instead of Salina.

OKC s top notch and not a bad idea, but not sold on Dallas.

Re: Big 12 tournament
Unfortunately, I think Texas can draw for women's basketball now. You can hope and pray that AirTran in Des Moines eventually brings some form of Southwest, then flights will be relatively cheap to Dallas Love. I also think they are making a mistake in splitting the tournaments. More bang for you travel buck if you are assured of at least watching two games of your teams.
They are throwing a bone to the north schools. In a no-brainer move, the women's soccer tournament will be played at Livestrong Sporting Park on the Kansas side. It's a state-of-the art venue for soccer that just opened this year.

Re: Big 12 tournament
OKC drew well when OU had Paris and contended. If a Texas school is a contender, Dallas will draw fine, same in Oklahoma. The tournaments are staggered, so die hards can go to both. With WV and maybe later Louisville coming on board, we might hope again for KC in the future. Meanwhile, we need to find a way to get there. Des Moines airport has always been high compared to Omaha. I would expect us to come up with packages and maybe bus tours.

Re: Big 12 tournament
We're totally disappointed and disturbed, but won't make any difference. Looks like the South schools prevailed. We go to KC, went to OK City, and will make every attempt to find a way to Dallas. As previously stated, let's hope SWA gets it in gear so we have some affordable airfare.

Re: Big 12 tournament
OKC is a nice site. Dallas sucked when it had the men there with them, itll be a ghost town just with the women.

I hope your right, and they eventually see the error in their ways. Its still going to be tough to sell a venue in a state where the only BCS university dissed the Big 12. Even though it was not KC's fault, as over in StL they are giddy about what went down.

Re: Big 12 tournament
The fun of the Big 12 tournament was that both teams teams were playing and you could bounce back and forth. This is an idiotic move...the women's tournament on it's own in a large arena is foolish and won't draw
