That's true - but I think Lauren was a stopgap after a big defection of 1 and 2's in the prior classes. She lived up to my expectations, that and more. She was not big, fast or quick. But, she was one of the crafty players we had and a very high bb IQ.
Lauren was fourth in scoring (which is good and bad) and she had some other notables like a good 3p percentage. I'll miss her thoroughly. Not to worry as Nikki is going to be great and the the ladies coming in are much anticipated.
Cheer up my friend!
I am giddy awaiting the arrival of Emiah - one of the most intriquing players in YEARS! If she lives up to her potential, look out!
There is no escaping that despite posts not mentioning Emiah, she is one to watch out for... and I feel I speak for MANY and can not wait to see her in action.
great kid! see how she handles the big spot light. don't get your hopes up too high. think the point guard for ikm was better this year.
If it was hair color, then my apologies!! I've read a lot of post about the team needing to get a point guard from JUCO, and just thought this was another oversight of the good guard talent that's on the way. Honestly, and not just as a father I believe Emiah (because she's played at a high level, and her Circuit team practices look so much like an ISU practice) will be a nice suprise this yr. but she's working hard now to be an immediate impact kid.. Again my apologies..
With Elly on scholarship and Youngblut gone, Hagedorn is the only walk-on next year so far.
We've never had three in the Fennelly era. From 99-00 through 05-06, we had two each year except 00-01:
99-00: Robson and Stribe (no scholly open for Stribe's redshirt year)
00-01: Sywassink (would have been two except Robson got a scholly her senior season)
01-02: O'Neil and Smith (no scholly open for either redshirt)
02-03: Sherman and Beenken
03-04 through 05-06: Beenken and Reinert
We would have had two in 06-07 (Lange and Reinert) but Reinert got a scholly for her senior season
Some more experienced backcourt help might be helpful, but I don't know that the player needs to be a PG. Other than Arganbright and Hagedorn (essentially two walk-ons), our entire backcourt will be freshmen and sophomores.
With the Vanloo situation up in the air, we could potentially be stuck with only four Big 12-caliber players for three backcourt slots if she doesn't make it: Moody, Williamson, Bingley, Kidd. It's a good thing three of those four can play PG, especially since Fennelly seems to prefer having at least two guards on the court capable of playing PG.
If Vanloo doesn't make it and we add nobody else, we're in trouble from a numbers standpoint. If even one guard gets injured, we're screwed. If one gets into foul trouble, we're screwed. Even if neither happens, we either have four players sharing three positions (and therefore expected to average 30 minutes among them) or we have to go to a three-post offense, which I personally don't care for but some other people wouldn't mind seeing (Hallie moving to the 3).
A juco combo guard (like Mansfield and Cole were) wouldn't be a bad insurance policy. That player would likely not be playing much point unless absolutely necessary, though.
I think from a starting guard perspective (in two guard sets) we are in very good hands with Moody, Williamson, Bingley, & Kidd. More depth would certainly be better though so if Vanloo doesn't make it, some juco depth would be good. Doesn't have to be JUCO, just not sure if you can find a class of 12 guard capable of giving quality minutes when needed in the Big 12 at this point of the year. Much of this year we played 3 guards, so even with Vanloo we are kind of thin.
When I look at some of our best teams we had a really good 3 who was who had the height to go inside, but the ball skills and shooting to play on the perimeter. This year we filled that position with a true shooting guard. If we bring in a Juco I would love to see is find someone to play that classic 3 spot. I think the design last year was for Schroll to be that player, but things didn't work out with her. We were spoiled the previous four years with Bolte filling that spot.
Am I forgetting someone on the roster who is that natural 3 who get to the hoop, get rebounds inside as well as hit the big outside shot?
Net my concerns aren't really about the true guards it is the 3 spot which traditionally in Bills system has been a key player for us.
Agree with Red. We don't really need a PG. What we need are shooting guards. We need some consistent (and not just one) threats from outside.
