While I am concerned here too, we do have a couple top 2014 posts(Lorenzen) on our target list so not getting Potter may help our situation w them.

Coach talked about recruits on eadio show. Said Baier will see minutes this year primarily for prep for next year because she will have to contribute and HC will move back to 4. Said we will see more smaller line- ups next year.

Sounds like not getting Potter was a big disappointment, albeit because she was the last hope for a true big in this class. Hope Jensen can be the second coming of Pop, or at least "Pop Light", but she'll have to have full recovery of that knee.

    Re: WBB early signees...

How about getting a fifth year of athletics from a current senior volleyball player? Is that possible? I know that basketball players have taken a fifth year on the volleyball team. For example, Roethlisberger at OU last year.

Player Bio: Carlee Roethlisberger - SoonerSports.com - Official Athletics Site of the Oklahoma Sooners

I seem to recall a standout basketball player doing the same thing at Minnesota a few years ago.

Taylor Knuth, a 6-2 MB senior volleyball player, played for All Iowa Attack basketball in high school. If she wants to go for a grad degree and still has some basketball in her, can a player take a fifth year going from volleyball to wbball?

Seems to me I remember Stevie Johnson doing the same thing here. Played basketball for 4 years and then actually started at linebacker for the football team in year 5.

Excuse me if this has already been posted, but a good article on the senior class of girls basketball players in the DM Register:

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...chool%20Sports

Obviously many have committed, but great to see coming out of our state.

“I think this senior class is one of the most talented to come through Iowa in many, many years,” Ames coach Joel Sullivan said. “Out of my 21 years, it’s one of the most impressive classes.”

“She’s [Jadda Buckley] worked so hard in the offseason,” Mason City coach Curt Klaahsen said. “She’s been going to Ames three or four times a week for workouts. She’s not been satisfied with where she’s at.”

Always good to hear. Looking forward to seeing her play in some local gyms this season.

You have five years to play college athletics (barring a petitioned 6th year) and you can play four years in any one sport. As long as they were never a redshirt, someone playing four years in a sport can play one season in another sport the next year.

Thanks, mred, for making this clear. If Knuth has some bball skills left, and wants some court time after volleyball, it could be very interesting to have her give some post depth next year.

Tyseanna Johnson scored 37 points tonight in DeLaSalle's 82-76 loss tonight in season opener.

Today, it seems more that WBB players get a year of volleyball after basketball eligibility is up. Melissa Jones at Baylor and Carli Rothlisberger at Baylor being recents in the Big 12. Maybe a little tougher to go the other way. Still, I recall Stanford's Kristen Folkl in the 90's who played VB for 4 years then put in 2 years in basketball. She went to Final Fours in both, was AA in both, then played pro basketball. BTW, she was 6'2".

Jamie Straube was a good basketball player, also.

Jadda Buckley had 9 points vs Des Moines Lincoln yesterday. Guessing she didn't play much as Mason City won 74-17.

Tyseanna Johnson's team lost tonight 82-59. Sounds like she finished with 23.

Revisiting the topic of volleyball players using their 5th year eligibility with wbb (actually, not just 5th year, any eligibility)...

It was announced this week that Texas added a vb player to their wbb team:
Women's Basketball preview: at Iowa State - TexasSports.com - Official website of University of Texas Athletics - Texas Longhorns
HATTIS JOINS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SQUAD ... Freshman middle blocker Sara Hattis, a member of the 2012 NCAA Champion Texas Volleyball team, has joined the Women’s Basketball squad for the remainder of the season (beginning Dec. 29). Hattis came to the Forty Acres as a highly touted two-sport athlete at Cleveland HS in Rio Rancho, N. M. The 6-4 forward was ranked among the top 100 hoops products nationally before deciding to play volleyball at UT.

Previously, OU added two vb players to their wbb team.
Women's Hoops Back in Action - SoonerSports.com - Official Athletics Site of the Oklahoma Sooners
    TWO ADDED TO SOONERS' ROSTER
The season-ending injuries to four players left the OU women's basketball team with eight remaining on its active roster before the holiday break, but OU volleyball players Tara Dunn and Eden Williams joined the team Dec. 26.

Dunn (Poth, Texas), a 6-2 outside hitter, and Williams (Amarillo, Texas), a 5-3 defensive specialist, were both multi-sport stars in high school. Dunn was a Class 2A All-District MVP and All-State Tournament Team member.

Wonder if Taylor Knuth would consider it? What they really need is a back up at point guard. Kristen Hahn lettered three years in HS. Don't count on it, though. She has National Team aspirations in volleyball.

This conversation started when discussing the lack of post players next season. Matlock will be a senior next year and also earned three letters in BB while in HS.
