In OKC, the two arenas are across the street from each other, and Bricktown is an easy walk.
In KC, the two arenas are ~5 blocks apart, with P&L in between.
In Dallas, they tore down one arena, and if your hotel isn't near AAC/West End, your options are limited.

OSU doesn't have a strong following. OU is iffy.
In KC, you could count on ISU, KSU and even KU fans to show up.
My point is that because this is the first year of this format, the glut of Baylor fans will give the appearance that separating the tournaments (both by date and by state) is a good and sustainable idea, when it really isn't.

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
And God forbid...if Baylor were to be upset early...the arena will be a ghost town

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
OKC had the one big OU turnout in the final to beat us (12K). Their arena has been partially filled all year. Baylor has only supported in large numbers for Lurch. We'll see where it goes, but corporate money buying tickets doesn't look good on TV. That's what Dallas has always had. I've never seen all the pressure and mentions for buying tickets during games as there has been this year. They're hurting. ISU benefits from crossover fans in KC, but has always had big presence by itself. KSU fans have been okay in numbers when good, but KU support in KC is always low.
My prediction. If KU beats TCU, we'll see the ref's make a difference in our game with KU, making sure to get them selected. One and done for us. Nobody will see it, and it's money for the conference. Pessimistic, but I don't believe in coincidences.

Also sounds like if Municipal Auditorium isn't updated, they won't be an option to host.

Or how about Wichita? They have a sparkling new 15,000-seat arena that has already hosted NCAA WBB.
Tulsa has the BOK Center, and is almost the same distance from Ames as it as from Austin. Doesn't get a whole lot more "central" than that. Opened in 2008 and holds just under 18,000 for basketball. They've hosted NCAA MBB and C-USA MBB.
Or maybe we could all go back to Salina, like in the olden days.

Gee, am I missing something? Attendance has sucked at Memorial Auditorium in KC lately...

Tulsa might even draw some locals due to the WNBA franchise there. Yet still it would be very advantageous to OU & OSU. I wonder what might happen if the Big 12 expands to Clemson, Florida State etc. as there has been considerable talk about. Would we move the tourney to Memphis and play in the Griz Pyramid? Kind of like that idea too. Right on the banks of the "father of waters". The Indians would be proud!

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
The only reason that Dallas is selling so well, is they are 90 minutes from Waco. When Brittney is gone, will that happen again?
I think to a large extent, the WBB tourney attendance can predicated on what teams are hot. Kansas City numbers dropped the last couple years, because ISU was one and done. If ISU was to play in a championship game against Baylor in the Big 12 tourney in Kansas City, Municipal would be filled to the rafters just like it was in 2000-2001.
Also, when KSU was hot, and ISU good at the same time, that place was packed. When KSU had Olde, you couldn't shake a stick in there.
Will Dallas be good in the future? who knows. Maybe the best solution would be to hold it in Little Rock, so it isn't in anyone's back yard.

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
Maybe Kansas City can host the WBB tourney if the dates are separate, and have it in Sprint Center. :-)
The biggest problem with having the tournaments together is needing two high-end arenas. My friends in the KC CCTB have told me repeatedly, there just isn't enough "other" business to demand the major investment in upgrading Municipal, when it is A a historically protected building, and B down the street from the Sprint Center. Most often, Municipal floor is used for extra exhibit space that for games/events.

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
The Big 12 needs to hold their conference tournaments in the states that actually have Big 12 teams in them.
That means Dallas, OKC, Tulsa, Wichita, Des Moines, etc., but certainly not KC. It's embarrassing.

Uhhhh, why? I'm mean who cares if KC is technically in Missouri? The greater KC area is in both states.

Re: Dallas * Big 12 Tourney
Look at where the Missouri Valley holds their tournament. One school out of the entire conference is in Missouri and they have a great site (St. Louis) for their tournament. Its about location not affiliation. The only thing Dallas is a decent location for is Texas basketball. Even that is doubtful. I like the idea of having it somewhere that doesn't give an immediate advantage to one school or another yet is accessible. Tulsa might be an interesting choice as is KC.
