Department of Athletics
Eastern Illinois University
Charleston, IL 61920 email: afoneil@eiu.edu phone: (217) 581-7617 Anne O'Neil, a 2005 All-American on the court and in the classroom at Iowa State, is in her second season on Brady Sallee's staff.
This past spring she was given a second chance to make a healthy impression with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs. Originally selected by the Monarchs with the 30th pick in the 2005 draft, becoming the second-highest player chosen in Iowa State history, she was the last player let go as the eventual WNBA runner-up broke camp.
O'Neil was a three-year starter for the Cyclones and head coach Bill Fennelly. She posted a double-figure scoring average each season, capping her stellar career with a team-high 16.6 points per game while leading Iowa State to a 23-7 record and berth in the NCAA Tournament. Following the season she was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press and Women's Basketball Coaches Association as well as First Team All-Big 12 by the league coaches and newspapers based in Kansas City, Fort Worth and Austin. For her exemplary work in the classroom she received First Team Academic All-America honors.
With her impressive list of accomplishments and honors, it was no surprise that ISU Athletics named her the 2005 Female Athlete of the Year.
"I talked to [Coach Fennelly] quite a bit about Anne jumping right in as a coach after her playing career and he gave her the best endorsement possible in saying he would hire her if he had an opening on his staff," Sallee said when O'Neil came to EIU.
She shot just under 50 percent from 3-point land her senior year and participated in the ESPN 3-point Contest. She finished her career as ISU's all-time leader in free throw percentage (.831) while also ranking in the Top 10 in 3-point percentage, free throws made and attempted and assists.
"She was obviously a great player and understands what it takes to succeed, so that's instant credibility," Sallee said. "Hopefully our players can tap into her knowledge. We're fortunate to have her at the beginning of her career."
O'Neil spent her freshman season at the University of Illinois, where she was a starter and earned First Team All-Freshmen Team and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten recognition.
She graduated with a bachelors degree in communications from Iowa State and is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She called him out to the dance floor and he was too dumb not to ask for her number before she left. To this day he still gets crap from his friends about that one. |
