With its backs against the wall, Aplington-Parkersburg Chelsea Poppens refused to let the Falcons lose. The senior turned in a stellar performance, recording 30 kills, 14 blocks and 24 digs as Aplington-Parkersburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit to stun Kuemper Catholic, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-10 in a Class 2A first round contest.
Poppens’ performance overshadowed a similar outstanding effort from Kuemper Catholic’s Amy Dentlinger, who recorded 27 kills and 15 digs while teammate Sydney Stickrod added 19 kills.
As a team, the Falcons didn’t give many points away at the service line, making 92 of 94 serves with six aces, with Poppens leading the way with three.
Aplington-Parkersburg advances to the Class 2A semifinals to face Western Christian at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
Kuemper Catholic ends its season at 31-3.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
