I don't think it is impossible, but very difficult. Without a doubt, no one is getting passed UConn right now and the fact that teams in Women's basketball are able to go undefeated speaks that there is a parity there. You never here of men's teams going undefeated.
However, Oklahoma is also considered one of the elite teams and our game against Oklahoma wasn't that far off to think that in upset is out of the question. Stanford was just a bad matchup for us. If you would to give us two chances at any of the half dozen elite teams we would of probably come up with a close game or upset out of at least one of them.

I think I follow women's basketball, do you?

I think I follow women's basketball, do you? You talking about ISU then, or ISU now? You talking about UConn then, or UConn now? (MSU is not a women's basketball powerhouse and they are not an elite team.)
He said we have a mile to go before we can and right now I would agree with him. Last year we were good, but we didn't have the horses to compete against the top teams and this year we will be even further away. ISU might be a frequent top 25 and NCAA tournament visitor, but we are not a UConn or Tennessee.

Tennessee didn't even win this year in the first round, how can you say we're not competitive with them? you want to talk about Tennessee now, or Tennessee then?

Last year was a unusual year. The fact is that this is the first time they have failed to make the sweet 16, ever. For as good of a coach that BF is, he can't even make the tournament every year let alone the sweet 16. I bet you anything that Tennessee will be right back there this season and will actually be a ways ahead of us. Last year's Tennessee was not an elite team, but they are still an elite program.
Can ISU get there, I would like to think we can, but the fact is we aren't there now. Last year's team was one of the best we have ever had and they still were third in the conference behind Baylor and Oklahoma. We are not an elite program, we are a very good program but we are not elite. I would compare our WBB to Iowa football, in no way an elite program but very solid with a few great years.

Yeah, I actually agree with this, I was just trying to point out Tennessee isn't the Tennessee they used to be, with Pat gone, I think they'll fall back to a program similar to ours.
I don't want to argue about whether we're elite or not, we're a "very good" program and we can agree on that and as long as it stays that way and we're consistently making the tourney and contending for conference championships in the toughest WBB conference in the country then I'm OK with that. An elite-8 or final four appearance once every 3-4 years would be icing on a very good cake.

Tennessee lost to Ball St. with its #1 and #2 posts and #1 point guard on the bench with season ending injuries and had 4 freshmen on the floor. Okay, maybe ISU would be competitive with that team.
I love ISU WBB, but there is a mile between the elite and 2nd tier elite programs. Frankly, I do not consider OU nor Maryland top tier elite teams either. UCONN, Baylor, TN, NC, and Standford are the creme de la creme.
I think the current recruiting efforts may help narrow that gap.

. Tennessee lost 4 of their 5 starters, and had tons of injury issues. I have followed TN WBB for over 20 years. TN, not what they used to be, oh, you mean back to back national championships in 2007 and 2008, and now they're a has been team. Whatever.

He was talking specifically about last year and he may be right about Tennessee after Pat, but I don't think Tennessee will ever fall off. Look at Oklahoma or Texas in football, sure they have some bad years now and then but they have always been the elite teams.
Also I don't agree with your statement about Baylor being elite and Oklahoma not. Outside of 2005, what has Baylor done that is any better than ISU? Oklahoma has accomplished way more in my opinion. Baylor had one outstanding year when they went all the way, aside from that they have the same number of conference titles as ISU, less NCAA appearances and less Elite 8 appearances. Oklahoma has at least consistently won the Big 12 and has got to the final 4 a few times.
