Yup, old roster note for her says "Earned a scholarship as a senior after walking on in 2003-04."

    Re: WBB Recruiting continued...

The assumption is we won't see another bout of attrition like Arlen, Rockall, and Yackley. These are young freshman that are early in their career. They may easily transfer to another program, or decide they're not cut out for this level of commitment to the program. However, unlike last year I feel this team is gelling and I'm looking forward to watching them play tonight.

I didn't remember the Reinert thing at all. I've edited my original post to remove Reinert from the 06-07 walk-on list and to change the 01-02 walk-on from Anne O'Neil to Nina Smith.

There is an important reason for this that just occurred to me. Some walk-ons receive significant academic scholarships. Kandice Beenken attended ISU on a full academic scholarship. If you actively recruit someone athletically and they walk-on while receiving a full academic scholarship, I believe NCAA regulations force you to count that person against your scholarship limit even if it isn't an athletic scholarship. Lindsay Hoehns seems to be a candidate for significant academic scholarships, so that could be an issue here.

If the ISU staff is interested in Lindsay Hoehns joining the team, they have to wait until she enrolls at ISU before contacting her about it. She could probably talk to the staff if she initiated it, but they probably can't promise her anything.

BF said yesterday "back on recruiting trail tonight." With a home game today, I'm guessing he attended an in-state game last night.

That question actually came up at the BF lunch held every month in the Memorial Union. Next one is next week:

I think the freshman came into a totally different team. Last year was really the last ride for very solid upperclassmen line-up. It doesn't surprise me that the freshman never quite mixed in with that. This year the freshman are definitely a crucial part of the team and I think that means they'll stay.

yes, and I think of that trio, only Arlen would have played much had they all stayed. Arlen played a lot as a frosh, anyhow; by the way, she is tearing up her new league, scoring over 20 points in ten games and over thirty points twice.

At least Whitney stuck it out. I truly hope the two guards coming next year are good ones. I can't see a starting tandem of Cole and Williams. BF was probably at the Ankeny vs DM East game. East looks like a title contender this year and all their good players are juniors.

I've been thinking about this, and I'm thinking, from what BF said this time and previously about recruiting, that they really can't suggest someone to walk-on. They have to keep detailed records about all forms of contact with potential recruits, and if someone that was recruited ends up walking on, I'm sure that must be against the rules. And from the way he said it, I think they don't even suggest
walking on directly to an ISU student. I wonder if they are really interested, they can perhaps suggest to their h.s. coach that making the team would be highly likely.

Also, I suspect after the Wesley Johnson situation, and expecting to more than
likely have 10 players next year, that all the underclassmen have been talked to
several times about their commitment to be back next year. I can't imagine they
wouldn't need another signee if ANYONE didn't give them a strong signal they will
be back. The next year, with lots of potentially great freshman coming in, is
    another story.

I'm pretty sure this is only true if the player receives some sort of non-athletic scholarship from ISU. However, like I stated above, Hoehns sounds like a likely candidate for academic scholarships.

I found a great article about this while trying to back this up. It's 6 years old and discusses football, but it applies here as well.

Scout.com: Setting the walk-on record straight

(In the quotes below, Chris King is the director of compliance at Alabama, and the Bryant scholarship is a non-athletic scholarship at Alabama)

Many fans mistakenly assume that precisely because the Bryant Scholarship is considered “institutional aid,” if a walk-on football player uses the Bryant Scholarship to pay his expenses--then sees action during his first two years on campus, he must count against Alabama’s scholarship numbers.

If the athlete was considered “recruited” by the NCAA, that is correct. If not, it is not.

King continued, “For a recruited walk-on, a student-athlete who was recruited by UA and who receives institutional financial aid granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability (i.e. the Bryant Scholarship), that student-athlete does not have to be counted until he engages in varsity intercollegiate competition.

“If the student-athlete does engage in varsity intercollegiate competition, the student-athlete becomes a counter.”

Right, that’s precisely what many knowledgeable fans already know. But King continues.

And here is the part many fans should pay close attention to.

King said, “If it is a ‘non-recruited’ student-athlete that receives the Bryant Scholarship, the student-athlete would not count, regardless of intercollegiate competition.”

Note the two phrases: “would not count” and “regardless of intercollegiate competition.”

King is saying that if the walk-on in question is judged to have been “non-recruited” by the NCAA, then he can play whenever he wants--even in the first game of his first semester--and not count against Alabama’s scholarship numbers.

    ...

The difficult distinction for many fans, of course, is whether the athlete in question is “recruited” or “non-recruited.”

    Who judges that? The NCAA.

But actually the rules for that designation are fairly straight-forward. Before walk-ons are allowed to participate in practice, the Tide staff goes over them carefully, and normally the walk-on athlete signs a form acknowledging the circumstances of his recruitment (or rather non-recruitment) by the Alabama coaches.

    Re: WBB Recruiting continued...

I found the appropriate NCAA rules:

    http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uplo...c781e128ae.pdf

    15.5.1.1 No Athletics Aid—Certification Required.

A student-athlete (except for a recruited football or basketball student-athlete) who does not receive athletically related financial aid per Bylaw 15.5.1-(a) through Bylaw 15.5.1-(c) but receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.4.1) shall not be a counter if the faculty athletics representative and the director of financial aid that the student-athlete’s financial aid have certified was granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability. The certification shall be kept on file in the office of the athletics director.

15.5.1.2 Football or Basketball, Varsity Competition.

    In football or basketball,
a student-athlete who was recruited by the awarding institution and who receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.4.1) granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability does not have to be counted until the student-athlete engages in varsity intercollegiate competition (as opposed to freshman, B-team, subvarsity, intra-mural or club competition) in those sports. For this provision to be applicable, there shall be on file in the office of the athletics director certification by the faculty athletics representative, the admissions officer and the chair of the financial aid committee that the student’s admission and financial aid were granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability. (Revised: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93, 1/11/94, 6/20/04)
