Thanks for that MRed; that was one fine starting five; I had forgotten how good those five young women were: they could all score and rebound--a great team.
They lost to Penn State by one point in the sweet 16 the same night the best-ever ISU MBB team lost to Michigan State in the elite eight. We watched the MBB game on a projection screen at the official pregame party, and then we walked over to Municipal for the WBB game. That was one depressing drive back from Kansas City.
Jess Zinobile, the nation's third-leading scorer, had 27 points in a strong performance for 14th-seeded St. Francis (23-8).And, I echo the earlier sentiments about the next weekend in KC being a heartbreaker. We were that close to having two teams in the final four and came away empty.
That was definitely one of the most difficult days to be a Cyclone. We were so close to major glory on a national stage, and fell short. I never thought that I would look back a decade later with glumness and say that those were our "best days" and our "best teams" ever. You have to really appreciate the good times when they come because you don't know when it will ever happen again, unless you're UConn, TN, or Stanford.
ISU WBB best team is yet to come. We have had some great guards the last few years, but we have had some real disappointments in the posts. We are playing better defense, and I think now that ISU has some posts with the potential to have the impact Welle did, and some great recruits coming our way, the next few years could be really special.
