HS seniors games this weekend in Cedar Rapids
Anyone see these games? All seniors games by school class. Halle C. is to play this afternoon. Lindsay Hoehns from Twin Cedars is also playing. Hoehns is coming to ISU as a student and I am wondering if she might walk on considering the likely small size of our roster next year. The only thing I have seen about her coming to ISU is that "she is going to concentrate on studies" and is a straight A student so maybe walking on isn't something she would be interested in doing.

I have heard that we are expecting a good quality walk-on this year. Don't know if there is any truth to the rumor or not, and don't know if it is Hoehns.

If she does than we would have three players (Hoehns, Bolte and Christofferson) on the team that had 2000 points and 1000 rebounds in their Iowa HS careers. Only five gals have done that in five-player girls hoops in Iowa. I did Google around a little and see that she won a $15,000 scholarship from the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union to attend an Iowa college or university. -

If that is true about her scholly, she would either not be able to take it, or not play ball. If she plays athletically she can't take a scholly because of her high school sports. But then again it could be for her community involvement and that would be permissable. Do you know what the criteria was for the scholly?

Hoehns wont play basketball. She is a solid basketball player, but is a legit vball player. If she did anything at ISU, I can't imagine it would be anything other than vball. She also is a track stud too.

Do you know what the criteria was for the scholly? You left off one more possibility: she can play ball and take the scholarship, but she'll count against the 15-scholarship limit. Depending on how many recruits we get in the future, this might be acceptable.
I found this: Sheldon School - Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union - E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award
The E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award is a program established in tribute to the personage who is most responsible for making the Iowa girl athlete number one in the nation, E. Wayne Cooley. The profile of the recipient should reflect discipline, perseverance, character, superior athletic skill, leadership, academic achievement and citizenship traits that have personified the life and expectation of Dr. E. Wayne Cooley. Five finalists will receive a $1,000 scholarship grant. The Scholarship award winner will receive a $15,000 scholarship ($3,750 annually). Each high school will be allowed one nominee
Since the scholarship does take into account athletic ability, you are right that she would count against the scholarship limit for any team she plays for.

To contradict myself, there's a chance this isn't 100% accurate. The NCAA rules regarding OUTSIDE scholarships awarded prior to enrollment at an institution are a little more convoluted.
One place states that any athletically-related aid causes the player to be a counter: 15.5.1 Counters. A student-athlete shall be a counter and included in the maximum awards limitations set forth in this bylaw under the following conditions: (Revised: 6/10/04)
(a) Athletics Aid. A student-athlete who receives financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability shall become a counter for the year during which the student-athlete receives the financial aid;
But a different section dealing specifically with outside aid contradicts this, stating that the player is a counter only if recruited: 15.2.6 Financial Aid from outside sources. ...
15.2.6.4 Athletics Participation as a Major Criterion. A student-athlete may receive financial aid through an established and continuing program for the recognition of outstanding high school graduates, provided the following conditions are met: (Revised: 4/22/98 effective 8/1/98)
...
(g) If the recipient is recruited, the recipient is considered a counter per Bylaw 15.5.1, and applied to the maximum awards limitations of Bylaw 15.5 for the sport in question;

I do seem to recall some discussion that this walk-on had to approach the coaching staff after she had enrolled/started school. Perhaps that explains the no recruiting thing.

two days until the April signing period starts and I hope we get some surprises. I would like to see at least one player added, if not two.

Re: HS seniors games this weekend in Cedar Rapids
anything leaking about who we might be looking at? I would think another guard, especially PG would be a priority.

Looking at her stats, she looks like a good walk-on candidate to me if BF is interested in taking on walk-ons. Especially since ISU could use a little extra guard depth.
