You better believe the University still claims them as Cyclone Greats - why can't part of the fanbase?
-> Dan left because there wasn't a job for him
-> Cael left because he saw some place he believed could finanically back the wrestling program better than ISU. he even improved us a rookie coach.
Dan was a widely successful coach
Cael is a really good coach from a small sample.
why hate on either one? they're Cyclones forever. Some people just can't get past their blind hatred.
Gable was going to have to wait, what - a decade, maybe more - to be ISU's coach. Is it really logical to expect a guy to wait that long to get his shot when other schools are calling? That's just crazy talk.
As far as Cael, okay, he had one of the top 5 jobs in the nation at ISU. But first Iowa was never his home (outside of the decade or so he spent there), he was never going to get the financial or facilities backing at ISU that Penn St offered him, it was going to be nearly impossible for him to build upon his legacy at ISU (Unless he did what Gable did at Iowa, he was never going to really be known for more than his wrestling career at ISU), not to mention he's got the chance to build one of the biggest programs in what may be the most talent-rich wrestling area in the nation (Ohio-Pennsylvania-New York). If you put your feelings of "betrayal" aside, can you really blame the guy for leaving? He's now got the chance to build his own program and his own legacy. Yeah, because this really looks like the face of a guy that hates ISU and has made that perfectly clear...
Gable knows that a ****** ISU program hurts UI and the state big time. He is a hawk all the way.

Re: Dan Gable Traveling Trophy? Really?
My thing with Cael is that he let the AD push out Bobby Douglas for him when he knew his heart wasn't in ISU.

Yeah, because this really looks like the face of a guy that hates ISU and has made that perfectly clear...
+1
Couldn't say it better myself!

It probably would have been longer Les Anderson was the top assistant and would have been next in line. Les was the top asst coach in the nation at that time and was a great wrestler for ISU and I am sure he is one of the people who made Gable who is today.

Re: Dan Gable Traveling Trophy? Really?
Very respectful comment relative to Les Anderson - I myself would have liked to have seen a Gable/Nichols travelling trophy - I am sure both schools would have agreed. Most people associated to wrestling, associate Gable to Iowa (not a problem), but the dual sponsorship would have focused on coaching, with respect given to each -as coaches.

I can't see Iowa agreeing to that.
Gable experienced tremendous success at both schools. He doesn't hate ISU in the least. If he hates ISU so much, why is he a donor?
Yes, he favors Iowa. Well guess what? He has spent half of his life working for Iowa and is currently employed by them. He's also active in their program. Comparative, he spent roughly 5 years in Ames. It is to be expected.
Gable IS wrestling in the state of Iowa. We need that damn trophy in Ames!!!

Also, I agree that naming it after Gable is a bit strange. I understand that he's an influential figure for wrestling in the state of Iowa, and that he is associated with both schools, but he IS associated with one school more than the other, IMO. But if the two programs agreed on it, I'll defer to them.

This would have been a great idea. People associate Gable with Iowa, not ISU. Gable himself does also, or he wouldn't have felt "guilty" about the trophy's name, questioning why ISU would agree to it.
A "Gable-Nichols" trophy would have been perfect.

If Gable and Cael both came back for some award ceremony, Gable would get cheered, Cael would get booed. You don't think that the trophy would help explain to the world that he IS a Cyclone? I like the trophy and it's more that just about Dan Gable; it's about keeping our wrestling tradition strong here in Iowa.
Dan Gable is a Cyclone and a Hawkeye. You can't ignore his acheivements at ISU. The idea that "we'll never have it" is bull****. The national championship should run through Iowa City or Ames every year. We (ISU) just need to improve our program. I know we tried with Cael and he ****ed us but that's not an excuse to cry about it. If ISU is satisfied with a medeocre wrestling program it's time to kill it.
